Despite being run in Liverpool, England – the Aintree Grand National hasn’t seen an English-trained winning horse for 10 years – with the last coming back in 2015.

But just who is the horse in question, and can the British stables break this long losing spell in 2025?

The Last English-Trained Grand National Winner Was Many Clouds In 2015

You have to go back to 2015 to find the last English-trained Grand National winner – which was Oliver Sherwood’s MANY CLOUDS.

Aged 8 at the time, Many Clouds was sent off as the second top-weight behind the 2014 Gold Cup winner Lord Windermere. He was rated 160 in 2015, which saw him carry 11st 9lbs to victory.

This was the most weight a Grand National winner had lumped to victory since Red Rum won with 12st back in 1974.

Many Clouds Provided Trevor Hemmings With A Third Grand National Win

Who Was The Last English-Trained Grand National Winner - Which Was 10 Years Ago?

Many Clouds was also giving owner Trevor Hemmings his third Grand National win after winning the famous steeplechase with Hedgehunter (2005) and Ballabriggs (2011).

His win also gave jockey Leighton Aspell a remarkable second win in the race. Having won the top prize only 12 months before on Pineau De Re.

However, the 2015 Many Clouds Grand National also remains the last time an English-trained winner stepped into the winners’ enclosure – with Irish and Scottish winners dominating since.

The 2015 race actually saw English-trained horses fill the first seven places. But since then they’ve been on a National drought.

The Many Clouds National will also be ed for being the last ride in the race for former champion jockey AP McCoy, who finished fifth on Shutthefrontdoor as the 6/1 favourite with the best horse racing betting sites in the UK.

Many Clouds went into run 16th in the 2016 Grand National off a 5lb higher mark. Plus won twice more in his career, but sadly collapsed and died after his final win in the 2017 Cotswold Chase at Cheltenham.

In total he raced 27 times, winning 12 of those and amassed £928,000 in total prize money.

Recent Grand National Winners and Their Countries

Since the Many Clouds Grand National win in 2015, the race has been won six times by Irish trainers and twice by Lucinda Russell, who is based in Scotland.

Meaning the most famous jumps race in the world hasn’t seen a winner on home turf for 10 years – can that change in 2025?

Who Are The Main English-Trained 2025 Grand National Runners?

IROKO (Oliver Greenall/Josh Guerriero) Won the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival. Has since switched to fences and winning once from his seven starts.

The step up in trip is the unknown, but is another who is owned by JP McManus, who has won the race three times before.

Many also feel he’s got a nice mark with 10-11 to carry, but aged 7 would be looking to become only the third winner of this age since 1940. Is trained by

KANDOO KID (Paul Nicholls) – Trained by the former champion trainer, who won the National in 2012 with Neptune Collonges.

This 9 year-0ld was a top winner of the Coral Gold Cup (old Hennessy) this season.

However, is rated 7lbs higher here and set to carry 10-11.

BEAUPORT (Nigel Twiston-Davies) – Hails from a yard that knows the time of day in the National. Winning the race in 1998 with Earth Summit and 2002 with Binderee.

This 9 year-old is also a National winner, having won the Midlands version in 2024. However, is rated a massive 16lbs higher this time.

HYLAND (Nicky Henderson) – Believe it or not, trainer Nicky Henderson has never won the Grand National.

He’ll be trying to put that right with his 8 year-old Hyland in 2025, who has won 50% of his six career starts. He’s also a grey horse so will be looking to become only the fourth different grey to land the famous race.

Hyland was last seen running second in the Ladbrokes Trophy at Kempton in February.
