Many horse racing fans will be asking – which horse won last year’s Grand National (2024)? Especially the ‘once-a-year’ punters who will be looking for history to repeat itself.

Read on to find which horse was the most recent Grand National winner – and if he’ll be running again in 2025 as he looks to win the famous Aintree race for a second year in-a-row.

I Am Maximus Won The 2024 Grand National and Is Back To Defend His Aintree Crown

I AM MAXIUS is the answer to the question – Which Horse Won Last Year’s Grand National?

He was the latest horse to cement their name on the Grand National hall-of-fame in 2024 and was guided home by jockey Paul Townend.

It was the first win in the famous race for Townend, who had landed both the Champion Hurdle and Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival the previous month.

I Am Maximus headed into the race as a proven National winner – having won the Irish version in 2023 – and became the fifth horse in history win both these prizes.

The horse was aged 8 at the time of his Grand National win in 2024, which is proving to be a popular age in recent years.

Six of the last nine Grand National winners have now been aged 8.

He was also providing top Irish trainer Willie Mullins with his second Grand National – having won the prize with Hedgehunter back in 2005.

Is I Am Maximus Running In The 2025 Grand National?

Yes, I Am Maximus holds an entry for the 2025 Grand National and as soon as the ‘once-a-year’ punters his name is sure to be popular with the best horse racing betting sites in the UK for a repeat win.

If he is to follow-up his 7 1/2 length success from 2024, I Am Maximus will, however, have to do it rated 8lbs higher and with 6lbs more in actual racing weight.

This is because the British handicapper has reassessed the horse since his win last year and is set to carry top-weight of 11st 12lbs.

The last horse to win with 11st 12lbs or more was the mighty Red Rum, who lumped 12st to victory in 1974.

I Am Maximus Is Bidding To Tiger Roll and Red Rum as Recent Grand National Multiple Winners

If last year’s Grand National winner, I Am Maximus, can follow-up his win he’ll also Tiger Roll and Red Rum multiple winners of the race.

Tiger Roll won back-to-back Nationals in 2018 and 2019.

While Red Rum won three Nationals between 1973 and 1977. He landed two on the bounce in 73/74.

Prior to Red Rum, it was Reynoldstown in 1935 and 1936 who was the next repeat winner.

While before that only Abd-El-Kader (1850 and 1851) and The Colonel (1869 and 1870) have managed two wins on the spin.

I Am Maximus is also owned by one of the top horse racing owners in the world – JP McManus.

McManus, who recently won the Cheltenham Gold Cup with Inothewayurthinkin, was winning the National for a third time – having taken the prize in 2010 with Don’t Push It and 2021 with Minella Times.

Minella Times will also be ed as the horse that had the first winning female rider.

Rachael Blackmore guided the 8 year-old home in the famous green and gold silks.

Irish National Winner Intense Raffles Looking To Emulate I Am Maximus

With I Am Maximus winning the Merseyside Marathon the season after landing the Grand National prize money.

Intense Raffles won the Fairyhouse race back on April 1st 2024, with former Grand National runner-up Any Second Now taking the silver.

Five horses have won both the Irish and English Nationals in the past – but none in the same season.

He’s since run a respectable second in the Bobbyjo Chase at the end of February and will head to the race as one of the 2025 Grand National favourites.

Those, however, looking to take on Intense Raffles might look to his age.

He’s still only 7 years-old and the National has only seen two winning 7 year-olds since 1940.
