As the world’s most famous steeplechase draws closer many horse racing fans are asking – which horse is favourite to win the Grand National in 2025?

The big race will be staged on Saturday 5th April, and in a tight betting heat – there are several horses vying for the 2025 Grand National favourites berth – but it looks like last year’s winner I AM MAXIMUS is the favourite to be the favourite.

I Am Maximus Is The Most Likely Favourite To Win The Grand National 2025

Grand National.

This 9 year-old has been put in as the slight market leader with the best horse racing betting sites in the UK.

And he could shorten further when the ‘once-a-year’ punters his name from last year.

I Am Maximus ran away with the race by 7 1/2 lengths 12 months ago (watch below). However, this time is rated 8lbs higher.

He’ll be looking to become only the third double winner of the race since 1974 and Red Rum and Tiger Roll as a multiple National hero.

Owner JP McManus has four others in the race too – as he looks for his fourth success in the race.

He also runs Meetingofthewaters, Perceval Legallois, Chantry House and Iroko, who is still only 7 and will be looking to become only the third 7 year-old winner since 1940.

In addition to winning last year, JP’s other National wins came with Don’t Push It (2010) and Minella Times (2021).

How Many Grand National Favourites Have Won Since 2000?

Since 2000 there have been 24 running of the Grand National, with Covid claiming the 2020 running.

During this period, we’ve seen SIX winning Grand National favourites (or t favs) land the prestigious prize.

Meaning the jollies have a fair 25% strike-rate since 2000. Which isn’t too shabby considering the competitive nature of the race.

Two of these winning Grand National favourites have also come in the last two runnings.

With I Am Maximus (7/1 jfav) and Corach Rambler (8/1 fav) crossing the line as market leaders.

Three of the last five Grand National favourites have also won, including the last two.

However, there has never been three winning favourites in-a-row to win the race, since it was first run in 1839.

Winning Grand National Market Leaders Since 2000

  • 2005 – Hedgehunter (7/1 fav)
  • 2008 – Comply Or Die (7/1 jfav)
  • 2010 – Don’t Push It (10/1 jfav)
  • 2019 – Tiger Roll (4/1 fav)
  • 2023 – Corach Rambler (8/1 fav)
