Jack Draper Suffers ‘Really Tough’ Loss vs Alexander Bublik 605w3l

Jack Draper’s French Open journey was brought to an abrupt end on Monday, as he fell to a shock defeat against Alexander Bublik in the fourth round. The British No. 1 lost 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 against the world No. 62.

Draper had beaten Mattia Bellucci, Gael Monfils and Joao Fonseca on his way to the last 16 and would’ve faced off against world No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals had he overcome Bublik.

The 23-year-old Brit was heavily favoured by bookmakers, fans and pundits heading into the match.

“It’s a really tough loss to take. Even though I’ve come up quickly this year and got myself to a high ranking, it’s been a steep learning curve for me,” Draper said in the aftermath of his defeat at Roland-Garros.

“I had an opportunity today, and I missed my opportunity.”

Meanwhile, former world No. 1 John McEnroe, who has backed Draper to win several majors in the future, believes nerves got the better of the youngster against Bublik.

He told TNT Sports: “It looked like the nerves got to Jack. It looked like Jack was stressing. He has been working on that.

“To me, that is going to be a factor in whether he wins multiple majors or not, to be able to handle those emotions. He was playing well, to me, and I was surprised that he was that stressed out.

“I thought Draper would win for sure, as I was not sure if Bublik could stick with it mentally for long enough.”

Bublik returns to action in Paris on Wednesday afternoon when he takes on Sinner in the quarter-finals.

How Much Has Jack Draper Earned In French Open Prize Money? 5w6s6x

Having been defeated in the round of 16, Draper takes home €265,000 in French Open prize money.

Had he overcome Bublik to advance to the last eight, he would’ve secured a minimum of €440,000. The tournament winner, meanwhile, will receive a stunning €2,550,000 payday, while the losing finalist earns €1,275,000.

Despite his exit, Draper is currently on track to rise up to fourth place in the ATP Rankings. The Brit is on 4,800 points and is set to overtake Taylor Fritz, who suffered a first round exit.

However, should Novak Djokovic reach the final, he would move up to 5,130 points. This would see him move above both Draper and Fritz in the rankings, from sixth up to fourth place.

Draper will now turn his attention to the grass court season, with the next major in Wimbledon on the horizon.

He won his first ATP title at the Stuttgart Open in preparation for Wimbledon last year. He won’t be defending the honour this year though, as he is reportedly planning on taking a week off to focus on practice.

Draper will return to action at the Queen’s Club Championships in West Kensington from 16 to 22 June.

“I’ll be happy to get on a faster surface and one I’m much more comfortable moving on,” the Briton said.

“I look forward to being back home and on the grass, for sure.”
