Watch full FA Cup highlights from St. James’ Park as Brighton beat Newcastle to the quarter finals after extra time, with two red cards changing the game late on.

Yankuba Minteh turns from villain to hero

It was Newcastle who broke the deadlock at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon, with Yankuba Minteh gifting a penalty to his former team after a careless challenge on Anthony Gordon in the box.

After a questionable Alexander Isak made no mistake from the spot with an emphatic strike into the top corner to give Newcastle the lead after 23 minutes.

Isak thought he had doubled the Magpies lead just 10 minutes later, but after smashing the ball past Bart Verbruggen his finish was quickly disallowed with the striker just caught offside.

Despite Newcastle’s dominance in the first half, Brighton were able to steal a goal back just seconds before half time with Minteh making up for his earlier mistake.

The midfielder was sent through on goal by Joao Pedro, and Minteh hit a low finish past Martin Dubravka to level the tie and silence the home fans.

Late drama at St. James’

It was the defences that came out on top during the second half, with the only real chance falling to Joe Willock who was unable to convert a cross from point blank range to give Newcastle a lead.

The game took a dramatic late turn with just eight minutes left, as Anthony Gordon was shown a straight red card for an aggressive push to the head on Jan Paul van Hecke.

A moment of madness from Gordon was matched by Tariq Lamptey just eight minutes later, with the Brighton defender also dismissed after a careless slide tackle for a second yellow to even the playing field yet again.

From the ensuing free kick Fabian Schar smashed a Kieran Trippier cross into the top corner but after a lengthy VAR review it was determined he had strayed just offside, with the goal disallowed and the game headed to extra time.

Brighton went so close to taking the lead in extra time but a flurry of Dubravka saves kept the Magpies in the tie and the FA Cup.

The Seagulls finally broke Geordie hearts deep into the final 30 minutes as 34-year-old Danny Welbeck slipped through the defence and beat a defeated Dubravka with a cheeky chip.

Newcastle weren’t able to fight back in the final five minutes of the game with Brighton advancing to the FA Cup quarter finals.
