A new Sunderland club record can be set on Saturday (September 14) with victory over Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth Argyle at Home Park.

The Black Cats have enjoyed an emphatic start to the new season, tasting victory in all four league fixtures. Régis Le Bris’ side are the only team in the EFL who can boast a 100% win record.

A trip to Rooney’s strugglers is next up for the Mackems. As ever, the loyal fan base have sold out their allocation for the 800+ mile round trip.

Last season, Sunderland went down 2-0 against tomorrow’s hosts. Goals from Morgan Whittaker and Finn Isaac Azaz secured the points.

Sunderland Club Record Up For Grabs

However, a victory in Devon will mean that the Sunderland club record of winning their first five league games of a season will be accomplished.

If the Black Cats are successful, many ers will be confident the club can go on and push for promotion. Manager Régis Le Bris has already been named the Championship Manager of the Month for August.

Therefore, the omen is looking good for the Mackems ahead of their crucial meeting at Home Park. Especially since they have won three of their last five games in the port city.

Players such as Jobe Bellingham, Luke O’Nien and Dennis Cirkin will all be vital to Sunderland’s chances. Club captain O’Nien narrowly missed out on winning the Championship Player of the Month award.

Régis Le Bris On Sunderland’s Early Season Form

Sunderland have made their best start to a league campaign in 99 years. The last side to win their opening five EFL Championship games was Cardiff City in 2017/18.

“We have a good foundation. The willingness to improve is there, but we need to maintain this mindset,” Le Bris explained prior to the meeting with Plymouth Argyle.

“We will have good moments and bad moments, but if this way of thinking is stable, then we will have the possibility to reach our potential.

“It isn’t just a question of age with our players. It is a question of potential and willingness to improve. With young players, we don’t have previous games to look back on, but it is almost more exciting.

“When this feeling is within a group, it is very exciting to understand how they can build new competencies.”

Ahead of the clash, the best football betting sites in the UK price the Black Cats at 4/5 to win.
