Scottish Premiership giants Rangers have announced Russell Martin as their next manager.

The former Swansea City and Southampton manager has signed a three-year deal with the club.

Martin, who had a loan spell at Ibrox during his playing days, was also linked with Leicester City. The former Scotland defender always had his heart set on a move to Glasgow.

Andrew Cavenagh, leading a US-based consortium that includes the San Francisco 49ers’ investment arm, completed the Rangers’ takeover last week. As one of the first acts of the new era, they have brought in 39-year-old tactician Russell Martin.

Well aware of the weight of expectations at the club, Martin confidently vowed to bring glory days back to Ibrox.

Martin said (via BBC):

From my time here, I had a taste of how special this club is, the expectation, the ion and the history. As I return, I’m determined to bring success back.

I’m here to set standards, work hard and do my very best to earn the respect of the Rangers fans. There’s a lot to be done, but the goal is clear: win matches, win trophies and give Rangers fans a team that they can be proud of.

He concluded by adding:

We want to play with bravery, to take the ball, to be aggressive, and to stand up in the big moments.”

Rangers finished a whopping 17 points behind champions and rivals Celtic in the 2024/25 Premiership rankings. They have not won the Scottish League Championship since 2020/21 and the Scottish Cup since 2021/22. Their last major honour in Scotland came in 2023/24, as they won the Scottish League Cup.

Russel Martin began his managerial career in November 2019, as he took charge of MK Dons.

He was at the club until July 31, 2021, overseeing 80 matches. Under his tutelage, MK Dons won 31 matches, drew 17, and lost 32, averaging 1.38 points per match (PPM).

Martin could not take the club to any silverware during his stay.

Impressed with his work at MK Dons, Swansea City brought Russel Martin on board in August 2021.

Martin was at the club until the end of the 2022/23 season, taking charge of them 99 times. Across competitions, Swansea won 36 games, drew 26, and lost 37. The club averaged 1.35 PPM during his stint.

Russel Martin came on as Southampton FC’s manager in July 2023. In his debut season, he ensured a Championship play-off spot for Southampton, as the Saints finished fourth with 87 points.

They came out on top in the play-offs. Southampton beat West Bromwich Albion 3-1 (on aggregate) in the semi-finals before nicking a 1-0 win over Leeds United in the final.

Fans wildly celebrated the Premier League promotion, but it proved to be too big a leap for the club. Shortly after Southampton lost 5-0 to Tottenham Hotspur and dropped to the bottom of the table, Martin lost his job.

Ivan Juric came in as his permanent replacement on December 21, 2024. However, things did not improve for the club. On April 6, 2025, Southampton were relegated after losing 3-1 to Tottenham.
