Real Madrid continues to be the most popular football club on social media globally. According to the numbers presented by Sportscasting.co.uk, the current Spanish and European champions added the most number of followers on social media in a year, 44m, across the six major platforms.

Real Madrid is the most popular club on social media and by some distance. The Spanish giants added 44m new followers during the past year (from 17/03/24 to 17/03/25), taking its total following to 420.4m. The data from Football Benchmark covers popular social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X/Twitter, YouTube, TikTok, and Weibo.

The data places FC Barcelona in the second spot with 33.5m new followers during the same period. The Catalan club also has the second-biggest overall social media following at 372.4m.

Manchester City saw the third biggest growth, but it was significantly behind the two Spanish giants. City added 12.8m new followers across platforms. However, when it comes to overall followers, City is only fifth with 165.5m followers.

Italian giants Juventus was next with 11.8m new followers in a year. Overall, Juventus have a following of 164.9m, which makes them the most popular club in Italy and sixth globally.

Liverpool added fifth most followers during the past year at 8.7m, but in the overall comparison, they are the eighth most popular football club on social media with a following of 150.9m.

Surprisingly, Borussia Dortmund added more followers than Bayern Munich during the past year. Borussia Dortmund added 6.9m new followers, while Bayern were marginally behind them with 6.8m new followers.

Overall, Dortmund has a following of 59.5m followers and isn’t featured in the list of the ten most popular clubs. However, Bayern are the ninth most popular club, with 140.6m new followers.

Premier League giants Manchester United appear to be losing its previous glory among the newer generations as it could land itself in the eighth spot with 6.6m new followers. However, United are still the third most popular club behind the two Spanish giants in of overall followers, with 228.8m followers.
