A week after their disappointing UEFA Champions League quarter-final exit, Real Madrid made the short trip to the Coliseum Stadium for their LaLiga Matchday 33 appointment with Getafe. After Barcelona extended their LaLiga advantage to seven points with a victory over Celta Vigo, Madrid needed maximum points against their local rivals to reduce the deficit.

Keeping Saturday’s Copa del Rey final against Barca in mind, Carlo Ancelotti made several changes to the lineup, leaving Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo, Eduardo Camavinga, and Antonio Rudiger on the bench.

Despite missing so many first-XI stars, Los Blancos enjoyed a brisk start, creating their first, albeit complicated, goalscoring opportunity in the sixth minute. Arda Guler pinged a long ball from deep, giving Federico Valverde an opportunity to test the goalkeeper on a half volley. The Uruguayan judged the bounce well, but his shot was not up to the mark, as it drifted wide of the goal.

In the 18th minute, Vinicius Junior zipped the ball across the face of the Getafe goal, finding Fran Garcia at the far post. The Spaniard’s first-time effort took a deflection, but the goalkeeper made a smart block. Real Madrid ultimately broke the deadlock in the 21st minute, courtesy of a gem of a strike from Guler. The young Turk engineered a bit of room outside the ‘D’ before letting fly, sending it into the back of the net.

Real Madrid took their foot off the pedal in the second half, allowing Getafe to dominate. The club from south Madrid had multiple stabs at goal, but Thibaut Courtois stood firm, making a slew of saves to secure a clean sheet and maximum points.

Thibaut Courtois (8.5/10)

The Belgian goalkeeper made six saves against Getafe, preventing 1.75 goals (xGOT). His most decisive save came in the first minute of injury time, as he reacted sharply to block Peter Gonzalez’s clever flick towards goal. Getafe defenders crowded him to get to the loose ball, but the former Chelsea goalkeeper claimed it before his opponents.

Lucas Vazquez (7/10)

It was one of Lucas Vazquez’s most respectable performances of the 2024-25 campaign. The captain created a chance, won all four of his tackles, made four recoveries, and came out on top in nine of 12 duels.

Raul Asencio (7/10)

The 22-year-old centre back made 11 clearances, intercepted the ball twice, and recorded four recoveries. The young Spaniard also drew three fouls, which greatly helped Real Madrid in high-pressure situations.

David Alaba (6.5/10)

David Alaba did not make any glaring mistakes against Getafe, but he also did not do anything to write home about. The Austrian, who delivered two accurate long balls and ed two recoveries, got hooked at half time.

Fran Garcia (7/10)

Put in a solid shift down the left of defence, striking a good balance between attacking and defending. The Spaniard took a couple of shots, made six clearances, and won six duels.

Aurelien Tchouameni (6.5/10)

The French midfielder was sharp with his clearances, but could not always keep up with the pace of Getafe attackers, getting dribbled past three times.

Federico Valverde (6.5/10)

Real Madrid’s engine, Federico Valverde, operated higher up the pitch on Wednesday. His work rate was commendable, and he made four recoveries, but he did not trouble the backline as he generally does.

Brahim Diaz (7.5/10)

With Rodrygo on the bench, Brahim Diaz got the opportunity to slot into the Real Madrid attack. The former Manchester City man took three shots, all of them landing on target. He also pulled off two dribbles, made four recoveries, won six duels, and drew three fouls.

Arda Guler (8.5/10)

Arda Guler operated as a No. 10 against Getafe, tormenting the backline with his slick es, sharp movement, and, of course, long-range shooting. In addition to scoring a gem of a goal, Guler created three chances, played eight es into the final third, won two tackles, and came out on top in five of seven ground duels. The 20-year-old deservedly won the Man of the Match award for his Wednesday-night heroics.

Endrick (6/10)

The 18-year-old attacker got a gilt-edged opportunity to make his mark against Getafe, but he failed to make it count. The Brazilian squandered an excellent goal-scoring chance in the 32nd minute, failing to beat the goalkeeper after Vinicius Jnr slipped him through on goal. He completed just seven es and lost all three of his ground duels before Ancelotti hooked him in the 64th minute.

Vinicius Junior (7.5/10)

Except scoring, Vinicius Junior did everything right against Getafe. He created three chances, pulled off five dribbles, delivered six accurate long balls, drew three fouls, and won eight duels. A confidence-boosting performance ahead of the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona.

Substitutes

Eduardo Camavinga (46′) (7/10): Worked tirelessly after coming on, winning two tackles, making six recoveries, and acing four ground duels.

Jude Bellingham (64′) (6/10): A mediocre showing from the Englishman. Neither created a chance nor took a shot.

Rodrygo (73′) (6/10): Did not carry any threat going forward but made two recoveries.

Dani Ceballos (78′) (6/10): Took seven touches and ed two clearances.
