An American consortium led by the investment arm of NFL franchise the San Francisco 49ers has completed a takeover of Scottish side Rangers.

Private healthcare mogul Andrew Cavenagh is heading up the group. After months of negotiations, an agreement has been reached for the group to purchase a 51% stake in the club.

There has also been confirmation of a £20 million investment to be made available over the summer.

Cavanagh will be named chairman after the club’s annual general meeting next month.

Current Leeds United chair, Paraag Marathe, will become vice-chair of Rangers.

Leeds are currently controlled by 49ers Enterprises. This meant the Scottish Football Association had to ratify the Rangers deal after discussions about dual interest risks ended satisfactorily.

San Francisco 49ers Owners Complete Rangers Takeover

In a statement released by the club, Rangers said: “The consortium will chart a new strategic vision for the club’s future prioritising on-pitch performance and long-term financial sustainability.”

Incoming chairman Cavenagh added: “We are deeply grateful for the trust placed in us by the Rangers board, shareholders, staff, and ers.

“This club’s history and traditions speak for themselves, but history doesn’t win matches. We know that the true way to honour the club’s heritage will be to drive performance.

“Our focus is simple: elevate performance, deliver results, and bring Rangers back to where it belongs – at the top.”

New Rangers vice-chair Paraag Marathe is also involved with Leeds United.

According to the club, Cavenagh and Marathe will oversee “all aspects” of Rangers’ operations.

One of their first moves has been to appoint a new sporting director. Kevin Thelwell, who was most recently director of football at Premier League side Everton, will begin his new role on Monday.

Next Rangers Manager Still To Be Confirmed

There has not yet been an official update regarding the next Rangers manager.

Belgian boss Philippe Clement departed in February with the side 13 points adrift of rivals Celtic.

That sacking saw Rangers appoint Barry Ferguson until the end of the season.

But with the former club captain only hired on an interim basis, the search for a new permanent boss continues.

Former Southampton manager Russell Martin is among the favourites for the role.

Russell Martin has been linked with the Rangers manager job.

Martin was dismissed by the Saints after their woeful start to the Premier League season, and has since been linked with fellow relegated side Leicester City.

Aside from Martin, outgoing Real Madrid assistant Davide Ancelotti is another name in contention.

Son of legendary manager Carlo, 35-year-old Davide is a highly-rated young coach with a desire to prove himself in a top role.

Rangers News Could Spell End Of Celtic Dominance

It’s been a difficult few years for Rangers fans. They have had to endure watching arch rivals Celtic lift the last four Scottish Premiership titles.

Aside from Rangers’ 2021 triumph under Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, Celtic have won 13 of the past 14 titles.

This new Rangers takeover is therefore seen by fans as light at the end of the tunnel.

Celtic have dominated Scottish football over the past 15 years.

There has been little detail from the new owners, but they have guaranteed a £20 million investment this summer.

More needs to be done to help Rangers topple Celtic than just throwing money at the problem.

But with new ownership and some serious financial backing, many will view this as a step in the right direction.
