Rangers sack Philippe Clement after 2-0 home defeat to St Mirren

Rangers have sacked manager Philippe Clement after Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at Ibrox to St Mirren.
Clement leaves Rangers sitting second in the Scottish Premiership table, 13 points behind league leaders and bitter Glasgow rivals Celtic.
The prospects of the club winning a trophy this season all but ended earlier this month when knocked out of the Scottish Cup at the hands of second division side Queen’s Park.
Rangers remain in the Europa League but face a stiff task up against Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce in the knockout stage, priced as distant 33/1 outsiders to win the competition with the best football betting sites.
Seven months after Rangers handed Clement a one-year contract extension and less than a month after appointing a new assistant manager in fellow Belgian Issame Charai, the pair find themselves out of a job.
Rangers have had four managers since November 2021 and their next appointment will mark number five in just over three years.

According to STV News, the club held a board meeting following Sunday’s embarrassing defeat and decided the best way to move forward was to start fresh with a new manager.
In midweek, club CEO Patrick Stewart conducted an interview with Rangers TV where he insisted the plan was to stick with Clement, noting the European progress as a key factor.
Clement arrived to Glasgow in October 2023 as Michael Beale’s replacement, winning the Scottish League Cup two months later and starting with a 16-game unbeaten run in all competitions.
A caretaker boss is expected to be named ahead of next Wednesday’s meeting with Kilmarnock in the league.
The likes of former player Steven Davis and current academy coach Kevin Thomson are expected to be among the candidates to take the interim role.
