PSG Can Become the First to Match Celtic’s Historic Achievement with Champions League Win Over Inter Milan

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) will strive to end their UEFA Champions League drought when they meet Inter Milan in the final at the Allianz Arena on Saturday, May 31.
Beating the Nerazzurri will not only make them the first French team in history to win the Treble, but will also see them match Celtic’s historic quadruple record of 1967.
PSG Can Match Celtic’s 58-Year Record By Winning Champions League Against Inter Milan
Celtic’s unbeatable 1966/1967 squad became the first and only team in world football to win four major trophies in a single season. The Scottish side won the UEFA Champions League at Inter Milan’s expense, beating them 2-1 in the Lisbon final. They also won the Scottish Premiership — finishing three points ahead of Rangers — and both the domestic cups. They beat Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup final and Rangers in the League Cup final.
Since Celtic’s heroics in 1967, many teams have won the Treble, but none have managed to win four major trophies over the course of a single campaign. Luis Enrique’s PSG have the unique opportunity to match Celtic’s feat if they can beat Inter Milan in Munich this weekend.
PSG Have Been Sensational This Season
Despite losing Kylian Mbappe to a free transfer to Real Madrid, Les Parisiens have managed to dominate every single competition this season, Thierry Henry claiming PSG have become more stable in Mbappe’s absence. They won Ligue 1 by a landslide, finishing 19 points ahead of Marseille. They beat Reims 3-0 in last weekend’s (May 24) Coupe de final to complete the domestic treble, having beaten Monaco 1-0 in the Trophee des Champions in January. ’s League Cup, the Coupe de la Ligue, has been defunct for five years now.
After winning three major trophies in , PSG need the European biggie, the UEFA Champions League, to complete the collection. They are merely a match away from becoming the first team since Celtic to win the ‘true quadruple.’
Of course, beating Inter Milan, who have a strong European pedigree, will not be easy, given PSG’s record in the Champions League.
What Is a Quadruple?
To become quadruple winners, a team must lift four trophies over the course of a campaign. For example, if a team wins the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League, they can proudly call themselves quadruple winners in the purest sense of the term.
However, if a team adds the FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup to the quadruple tally, football purists do not see it as a ‘true quadruple.’
What is a ‘True Quadruple’?
A ‘true quadruple’ is when a team wins four major trophies — three domestic and the highest European honour — in a single season instead of a calendar year.
Celtic won the ‘true quadruple’ in 1966/67, claiming the Champions League (then called the European Cup), the Premiership, the Scottish Cup, and the Scottish League Cup. All four trophies came in 1966/67.
Since then, we have had multiple Treble winners, but no team has won the ‘true quadruple.’

Barcelona famously won six trophies in 2009, but they did not win four major honours in 2008/09. Real Madrid won the Supercopa de Espana in 2008, spoiling Barca’s quadruple chances. Next season, they won all trophies except the UEFA Champions League, again missing the ‘true quadruple.’
No team across the top five European leagues has won the ‘true quadruple.’
Which Teams Have Won the Quadruple?
Bayern Munich (2012/13, 2019/20), Real Madrid (2016/17, 2017/18), PSG (2014/15, 2015/16, 2017/18), Barcelona (2015/16), and Celtic (1966/67) have won the quadruple.
Only Celtic have won the ‘true quadruple.’
What is French Football’s Quadruple?
Before ’s League Cup, the Coupe de la Ligue, was scrapped in 2017/18, a French team could win the quadruple by claiming the Ligue 1 title, Coupe de , Coupe de la Ligue, and Trophee des Champions. PSG won this domestic quadruple three times (2014/15, 2015/16, 2017/18).
This year, they have the opportunity to pull off a ‘true quadruple’ win, having already clinched the Ligue 1 title, Coupe de , and Trophee des Champions.
