Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has slammed INEOS’ decision to remove Sir Alex Ferguson from his ambassadorial role, labelling it as ‘disrespectful’.

Ferguson, the most successful manager in Manchester United’s history, was paid £2.16 million annually for his ambassadorial duties.

However, as part of cost-cutting measures, co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS terminated his contract last month, sparking outrage among some fans.

Scholes gave his thoughts on the matter on TNT Sports’ coverage prior to United’s draw with Fenerbache in the Europa League.

The former United midfielder expressed his disapproval of the move, stating, “I thought it was a little bit distasteful for what that man has done for the club. Almost a little bit disrespectful.”

While acknowledging that new owners often make changes, Scholes emphasised the significance of Ferguson’s contributions to United’s success.

“This club owes a lot to Sir Alex Ferguson,” he said. “It’s where it is now mainly because of the success he had for so many years.”

The timing of the decision also drew criticism from Scholes, who suggested that it could have been handled differently.

“The timing of it was poor because you think they’re in a really bad run of form,” he explained. “Could you have waited or done it before the season started, at the end of the season?”

Despite the controversy surrounding Ferguson’s removal, reports indicate that the parting was amicable. Ferguson is expected to maintain his role as a non-executive director and will continue to be welcomed at Old Trafford.
