Aaron Wan-Bissaka nets first West Ham goal as Hammers stun Newcastle

Aaron Wan-Bissaka scored his first goal for West Ham as the Hammers pulled off a huge upset at St. James’ Park to beat Newcastle.

Newcastle thought they were in front when Alexander Isak was sent through on goal and converted past Lukasz Fabianski inside the opening five minutes before VAR deemed the Swede had drifted offside and ruled it out.

The clash was flipped on its head when Tomas Soucek officially opened the scoring a few minutes later, heading home from Emerson’s corner to record his third Premier League goal of the season.

Soucek has now scored four league goals against Newcastle – the team he has been most prolific against among the English top-flight – and all four goals were to give the Hammers a lead.

Shortly after the interval, it was one of the unlikeliest scorers who doubled West Ham’s advantage as Aaron Wan-Bissaka put his stamp on the game with his first goal for the west Londoners since arriving from Manchester United.

One of the right-back’s only goals for the Red Devils came at St. James’ Park against Newcastle in 2020 and he took his goal in brilliant fashion, latching on to Jarrod Bowen’s through ball and firing across goal to beat the outstretched Nick Pope.

The last time West Ham took all three points from Newcastle up north was August 2021 and the victory couldn’t have come at a better time for the Hammers, who entered Monday Night Football off the back of winless outings against Everton and Nottingham Forest.
