Max Homa hit a caddie at the Masters on Thursday in a bizarre moment during his opening round at Augusta National.

Max Homa’s Shot Strikes Caddie

Homa was playing from the rough near the trees on Augusta National’s par-5 eighth hole when his low shot inadvertently hit another caddie standing in his line of play.

The caddie had his back turned and failed to move in time, resulting in the ball making and stopping short of the fairway.

Immediately after the impact, Homa could be heard yelling, “Come on dude!” as both he and the nearby gallery reacted to the unusual scene.

Despite the disruption, Homa managed to compose himself and went on to par the hole.

However, the incident quickly gained traction on social media, where fans expressed shock, amusement, and disbelief over the clip.

Caddie Confusion Comes After Split With Longtime Partner

The incident came shortly after news broke that Homa had parted ways with his longtime caddie Joe Greiner, who had been by his side throughout much of his PGA Tour success.

The split occurred following the Players Championship, and Homa revealed it was not his decision.

“It was not my choice so it sucked,” Homa said earlier this week. “But we always had a deal that we’re friends first… and he was wise enough to do what he did.”

Greiner is now temporarily caddying for Justin Thomas at the 2025 Masters, stepping in while Thomas’s regular caddie recovers from a back injury.

Thomas finished one stroke better than Homa on day one with a one-over 73.

Mixed Start for Homa at the 2025 Masters

Homa’s first round at Augusta was a bit of a rollercoaster. After making birdies on the second and third holes, he stumbled with bogeys on five and six.

The caddie collision on the eighth added to the disruption, though he managed to regain his footing and parred the hole.

His round finished with a two-over 74, placing him in a tie for 51st, nine shots behind leader Justin Rose, who delivered a stunning seven-under 65.

This year’s tournament is Homa’s sixth appearance at the Masters. His best result came in 2024 when he tied for third place, marking his strongest finish in a major to date.

However, 2025 has been a challenging season, with Homa missing five consecutive cuts leading into Augusta.

The Masters Leaderboard After Round One

  • 1st – Justin Rose: 65 (-7)

  • T2 – Ludvig Åberg, Corey Conners, Scottie Scheffler: 68 (-4)

  • T5 – Several players at -3, including early strong performances from Rory McIlroy

  • Max Homa – T51: 74 (+2)

Rory McIlroy, chasing a career Grand Slam, also had a day of highs and lows, ending his round with an even-par 72 after two double bogeys on the back nine.
