Masters Champions By Country – Which Nation Has Won The Most Augusta Titles After The USA?

As we head into the first golf major of 2025, we look at how many Masters champions there have been by each country – with the USA, of course, leading the way – but which nations are next best at producing Masters winners?
The USA Has Produced 64 Past Masters Champions (from 88)
The first ever Masters golf event was staged in 1934 – and was won by US golfer Horton Smith with a score of -4.
This was the start of the early American dominance in golf’s first major of the season.
Another 23 Masters wins for the US followed – with the other nations not getting a look-in.
In fact, since 1934, an American golfer had won every Masters – barring three – up until 1980.
With South Africa’s Gary Player the only other golfer to get onto the Masters Hall-of-Fame in these opening 45-year history of the tournament.
In total, as we head into the 89th running – the Masters has seen an incredible 64 winners from the US. With 39 of these different players with many winning the famous green jacket more than once.
This equates to a 73% share of winners over the last 88 Masters events for the US.

Which US Golfer Has Won The Most Masters Titles?
US golf legend Jack Nicklaus is the winning-most American in the history of the Masters.
Nicknamed ‘ The Golden Bear’, Nicklaus won his first green jacket in 1963 with a score of -2 and in total won 18 of golf’s major events during his career – which is three more than Tiger Woods.
In addition to his record major haul, he also remarkably finished runner-up in 19 majors – which is another record, but probably one he doesn’t like being reminded about.
His second and third Masters wins came in 1965 and 1966 – with his 1965 victory thanks to an incredible -17 score.
Nicklaus added three more Masters titles. Two in 1972, 1975 – with his six and final one coming eleven years later in 1986.
Being a past champion Jack Nicklaus continued to play in the Masters – with his last appearance in the major coming in 2005.

How Many Masters Has Tiger Woods Won?
Just one behind Jack Nicklaus on five Masters wins is Tiger Woods.
His first Augusta win came back in 1997 when he shot the best score at the time (-18) to win and be awarded the green jacket off one of only two Englishman to win the Masters – Nick Faldo, who won in 1996.
That score of -18 has since been equalled by Jordon Spieth’s win in 2015 and then bettered in 2020 by Dustin Johnson’s record score of -20.
The next Masters wins for Woods came in 2001 and 2002 – two victories that were sandwiched between two non-US wins with Fiji’s Vijay Singh winning in 2000 and Canada’s Mike Weir in 2003.
He added a third in 2005 and then after a 14 year wait recorded his fifth Masters win in 2019.
While it also came 11 years after his last major full stop – which was in the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines.

Who Was The First Non-US Golfer To Win The Masters?

Having won the first 24 Masters tournament, the first non-USA win in this golf major came in 1961.
It was South Africa’s Gary Player that ended the US domination with a score of -8.
Player went onto add two more Masters wins in 1974 and 1978 – in a remarkable Masters winning career that spanned 17 years.
More recently fellow South African’s Trevor Immelman (2008) and Charl Schwartzel (2011) made it five wins for their country.
They stand third in the all-time list behind the USA and Spain – but one ahead of England, who have four wins thanks to a trio of successes for Nick Faldo and one in 2016 for Danny Willett.
Spain Are The Winning-Most Masters Country – After America

Behind the USA in the all-time Masters country-winning list are Spain.
But they are trailing America still by a massive 58.
Four different Spanish players have been measured up for the green jacket over the years. With the first Seve Ballesteros in 1980.
He became the youngest Masters winner at 23 – beating Jack Nicklaus.
But Tiger Woods has since claimed the record when winning in 1997 aged 21.
Seve added another Masters win in 1983.
The other winners from Spain were José María Olazábal in 1994 and 1999.
With Sergio Garcia winning in 2017 and their most recent winner being big-hitting Jon Rahm in 2023.
