Newcastle United inflicted a 3-0 defeat upon Leicester City in their Premier League meeting on Monday, 7 April, pushing them closer than ever to an unwanted division record.

Eddie Howe’s side made light work of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester on Monday, finishing the game off inside the first half. Jacob Murphy scored two goals in the 2nd and 11th minutes before Harvey Barnes made it 3-0 just past the half-hour mark.

Leicester City Closing in on Unwanted Premier League Record

Leicester City are going through the worst patch of their Premier League history. The Foxes, who toppled giants on their way to a fairytale 2015-16 Premier League title, are on an eight-game losing streak in the English top flight. Their last victory in the English top flight came against Tottenham Hotspur on 26 January.

Since the 2-1 victory at Tottenham Stadium, Leicester City have conceded a whopping 21 goals in eight matches, with 12 of those coming at home. Shockingly, they could not score in any of their last eight games, marking their driest run in history. They are also the first Premier League team in history to lose eight successive home games without scoring.

Date Opponent Result Score

15 Feb 2025 Arsenal (H) Loss 0-2
21 Feb 2025 Brentford (H) Loss 0-4
27 Feb, 2025 West Ham United (A) Loss 0-2
9 Mar 2025 Chelsea (A) Loss 0-1
16 Mar 2025 Manchester United (H) Loss 0-3
2 Apr 2025 Manchester City (A) Loss 0-2
7 Apr 2025 Newcastle United (H) Loss 0-3

If they do not score in their top-flight meeting with Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, 12 April, they will equal Crystal Palace’s worst-ever run (9 games without scoring) in Premier League history. Palace’s shambolic run came between November 1994 and January 1995.

However,  unlike Leicester City, Crystal Palace did not lose all of their matches. During their dry spell, they held four teams, including Liverpool, to goalless draws. Coincidentally, Palace’s goal-drought came to an end against Leicester City that season. Richard Newman and George Ndah hit the back of the net to secure a 2-0 win.

Ruud van Nistelrooy Very Disappointed and Worried After Leicester’s Defeat Against Newcastle

Leicester City manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, who did a splendid job as Manchester United’s interim manager, suffered another thrashing on Monday.

After the game, he conceded that his team were not able to get out of the rut.

Very difficult, especially after 33 minutes. We lost another game starting with the best intentions. We lost another early goal. It’s very disappointing and worrying,” said Nistelrooy (via BBC).

It’s a big challenge. We all know the run of form we’re in. It’s extremely difficult. Especially if there aren’t points to build on. The most difficult thing is that we are in a place for such a long time, and there are no results.”

Nistelrooy is only the second manager in Premier League history — after Daniel Farke (Norwich City) in September 2021 — to lose eight successive home games.
