Newcastle United and England’s Kieran Trippier has announced his international retirement – seven years after making his debut.

The 33-year-old won 54 caps for the Three Lions, all of which came under former manager Gareth Southgate.

Trippier’s first senior international was a 3-2 friendly defeat to on 13 June 2017.

He captained his country on three occasions and is best ed for his one goal in an England shirt.

Famously netting a sublime free kick to give England the lead against Croatia in the 2018 World Cup semi-final, Trippier’s only international goal will be cherished by fans forever.

Kieran Trippier Thanks Southgate After Retirement From England

Posting on social media, Trippier thanked Gareth Southgate and the England staff for their faith in him during his seven-year international career.

He said: “I never thought as a young lad from Bury that I would play for my country let alone achieve 54 caps,”

“It’s been one of the biggest honours of my life to represent my country at four major tournaments.

“I want to say a big thank you to Gareth and all the staff that have worked with the England squad for the trust they have placed in me throughout the years.”

Under Southgate, Trippier was an integral player for England. He started the opening six games of Euro 2024, though was dropped for Luke Shaw in the final.

He also played in 2020 as England lost the final to Italy. In the 2018 World Cup, Trippier was a key man and regular starter.

Coinciding with Kieran Trippier’s retirement, interim England head coach Lee Carsley announced his first squad at 2:00pm today.

Among those named are the uncapped quartet of Angel Gomes, Tino Livramento, Morgan Gibbs-White and Noni Madueke. Each featured for Carsley when he managed England U21s.

There are recalls for Manchester City’s Jack Grealish and Manchester United’s Harry Maguire – after both missed out on Euro 2024.

Discussing the new-look England squad, Trippier added: “I want to wish Lee, the coaching staff and the team all the best for the future.

“And finally a big thank you to all the England fans for your incredible travelling all over the world to us and keeping us going in the difficult moments.”
