Juventus legend Marco Tardelli has criticized coach Thiago Motta, claiming the Italian does not understand the club and might not be the best man to lead it.

Tardelli’s comments came in the aftermath of Juventus’ harrowing defeats to Atalanta and Fiorentina in the last two weeks. Juventus are currently fifth in the Serie A rankings, trailing league leaders Inter Milan by 12 points.

One of the most successful teams in Italy, Juventus are going through a rough patch. On Sunday, 9 March, Motta’s side suffered a historic 4-0 defeat to Atalanta in Serie A. Since Juve had won their previous three matches, warning bells did not go off right away. However, Sunday’s (16 March) 3-0 defeat away at Fiorentina has put Juve and their boss under heavy scrutiny.

Juventus Legend Slams Under-Fire Manager Thiago Motta

Tardelli, who won five Serie A titles with Juventus, believes Motta does not have a good relationship with his players, adding that the issues go beyond the last two matches.

Speaking to Tuttosport, Tardelli said (via Football-Italia):

If only it was just the last two games that were the problem.

The relationship between Thiago Motta and the team seems completely cracked: There is no more dressing room.

When asked if the issues could be fixed, Tardelli added:

It’s difficult now, it’s late, there’s too much of a disconnect. The club let their moment slip away, they never intervened and did not intervene in a concrete way even after the defeat at the Franchi.

Everything is wrong at Juventus right now. And at all levels. The club had two captains – Danilo and Rabiot – and let them go. Now they find themselves with seven or eight players in the team who do not have the character to react to difficult situations.”

Tardelli Wants Juve to Sack Motta After 2024-25 Season

The former Juve star thinks the Bianconeri are in a mess, and sacking Motta will not help them so late in the season. He, however, believes that the club must find a solution at the end of the campaign.

The 1982 FIFA World Cup winner added:

Getting rid of the coach now would only increase the chaos, of which there is already a lot. I don’t see any positive in a change at the helm. I the tradition of ending the season with the coach who started it.

I am convinced that Thiago Motta is a good coach, but unfortunately he hasn’t understood what Juventus is. At the end of the season, the club will have to sit around the table to understand what happened. But a serious discussion is needed to get out of it. At that point, they will understand what the best solution is.”

According to the Italian press, the defeat against Fiorentina has not sealed Motta’s fate, as the hierarchy wishes to keep him on beyond the international break. However, if the Old Lady suffer another embarrassment in the clash against Genoa on 29 March, Motta could get the sack immediately.
