Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that he’s open to managing either Celtic or Rangers in the future and described the Scottish Premiership as a ‘league of ion’.

Former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho refused to rule out managing either Celtic or Rangers in the future, as his Fenerbahce side prepare to take on the ‘Gers in the Europa League on Thursday.

Mourinho’s contract in the Turkish capital is due to expire in the summer of 2026, and although he spoke highly of the Scottish Premiership and the Old Firm rivals, he has insisted that his entire focus is on the Yellow Canaries.

Rangers, led by interim manager Barry Ferguson following the dismissal of Philippe Clement, head to Istanbul for the first leg of their last 16 tie this week, before Mourinho and co. travel to Ibrox for the second leg next week.

Speaking to the media ahead of the clash, ‘The Special One’, who attended coaching courses held by the Scottish Football Association in the 1990s, was asked by reporters whether he’d consider a move to Glasgow in the future.

“In this moment, no, because I have a job that motivates me and a job that demands loyalty. But why not in the future?

“People can say that the Scottish league is a league of two teams, but it’s a league of ion. It’s a league of ion. And for me, ion in football is everything.

“For me, to play in empty stadiums, to play in competitions where there is not that fire of the ion doesn’t make any sense.”

The 62-year-old continued: “Celtic and Rangers, they are big clubs with big fan bases, with big emotions, big responsibilities, big expectations. Why not?

“But in this moment, I have a job. Celtic has a fantastic coach like Brendan (Rodgers). Rangers has (Barry) Ferguson now, so full respect for them and I’m not searching for a new job.”

At the time of writing, the UK’s best football betting sites heavily favour Fenerbahce at around 8/13 to come out on top in Thursday’s first leg, while a draw is rated at 3/1 and a win for Rangers is priced at 17/4.
