Sunday’s Irish 1000 runners will see a maximum of 14 entries heading to post – which are headed by Lake Victoria, who trainer Aidan O’Brien will be hoping can provide him with a remarkable eleventh success in the Curragh race.

Irish 1000 Guineas Runners Topped By Breeders’ Cup Winner Lake Victoria

The best horse racing sites in the UK are suggesting Lake Victoria is the one to beat in Sunday’s Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh.

This well-bred Frankel filly will head to the Curragh having won five of her six career starts, which included a famous win in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf at Del Mar last November.

Her only career defeat, however, came last time out in the English 1000 Guineas as Newmarket – when beaten 2 1/2 lengths by Desert Flower into sixth.

Many feel though with that run under her belt – her first for five months – she’ll improve for it but does have a bit of ground to make up with Flight (2nd) and Simmering (3rd), who finished ahead of her at Newmarket.

Lake Victoria is one of four possible Irish 1000 Guineas runners for O’Brien – with Royal Ascot winner Bedtime Story, Exactly and January the other entries at this stage for Ballydoyle.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien Has Won The Irish 1000 Guineas TEN Times

Aidan O’Brien Has A Cracking Record In The Irish Guineas

Trainer Aidan O’Brien has won the Irish 2000 Guineas 12 times – and he’s not far off that haul in the Irish 1000 either, with 10 wins.

Meaning the leading Irish handler has fired in a staggering 22 Irish Guineas winners across both races.

The first winner for O’Brien in the Irish 1000 Guineas came back in 1997 with Classic Park – which was actually the same year he got off the mark in the Irish 2000 with Desert King.

Since then, he’s had top winners that have included Winter (2017), who also landed the English 1000 Guineas that year – while his most recent was Empress Josephine in 2021.

Therefore, despite his record 10 wins in the race – O’Brien will head into 2025 on a mini-drought in the race with no win in three.

Aidan O’Brien’s Irish 1000 Guineas Winners

  • Classic Park (1997)
  • Imagine (2001),
  • Yesterday (2003)
  • Halfway To Heaven (2008)
  • Misty For Me (2011)
  • Marvellous (2014)
  • Winter (2017)
  • Hermosa (2019)
  • Peaceful (2020)
  • Empress Josephine (2021)

Dermot Weld is another trainer that’s done well in the race – winning six in total and two of the last three.

He’ll be hoping to add to that with his lightly-raced Kingman filly Swelter, who is 2-from-2 after a couple of nice wins at Leopardstown (watch below).
