Pulling off a thrilling 4-3 victory in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final against Barcelona, Serie A giants Inter Milan secured their place in the final of the most prestigious European competition on Tuesday night, May 6.

In the first leg at the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium on April 30, the Nerazzurri were cruising at one point, going 2-0 up. But their lacklustre defending, combined with the individual excellence of Barca attackers, caused the advantage to evaporate. It ended 3-3 in Catalonia, setting up a decisive second leg.

Inter enjoyed a rapid start at San Siro, with captain Lautaro Martinez and Hakan Calhanoglu putting them 2-0 up at the end of the first half. However, the game turned on its head in the second half, as Barcelona restored parity through goals from Eric Garcia and Dani Olmo inside the hour mark.

The Blaugrana thought they had won it when Raphinha fired them into the lead, for the first time in the tie, in the 87th minute. Some Inter fans saw it as the final nail in the coffin and left the stadium before the last blast of the whistle. The heroic hosts, however, fought their way back, with sco Acerbi making it 3-3 in the third minute of injury time.

Nine minutes into extra time, Davide Frattesi hit the back of the net to win the tie for Simone Inzaghi’s team. With their tickets booked for the Champions League final at the Allianz Arena, SportsCasting takes a look at their record in the showpiece event.

How Many Times Have Inter Milan Won the Champions League?

So far, Inter Milan have won the European crown three times. They won their first Champions League — then called the European Cup — in 1964, beating the mighty Real Madrid 3-1 in the final. Sandro Mazzola scored a brace while Aurelio Milani scored the other.

They defended their championship the following year (1965), claiming a slender 1-0 win over Benfica in the European Cup final. Jair da Costa was the goalscorer.

They lost to Celtic and Ajax in 1967 and 1972, drowning in European obscurity for the following three-and-a-half decades. Inter returned to the Champions League final in 2010 and conquered Europe for the third time at Bayern Munich’s expense. Diego Milito scored a brace in the final.

Their last appearance came against Manchester City in 2023, which ended in a 1-0 defeat.

1972 Ajax Loss 0-2 Cruyff (2)

It will be interesting to see if Inter Milan can improve upon their record when they meet either Paris Saint-Germain in the 2024-25 Champions League final on Saturday night, May 31. Unlike the Nerazzurri, PSG have a rather modest Champions League record, giving the Italians a psychological edge.

When Did Inter Milan Last Play in a Champions League Final?
