Leading 2-1 after an immaculate first leg display at the Allianz Arena last Tuesday, Inter Milan welcomed Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich to the San Siro for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday.
I Nerazzurri took a 1-0 advantage through their talisman and captain Lautaro Martinez in the first encounter, before Thomas Muller drew the Bavarians level with just five minutes to spare. It only took Simone Inzaghi’s side three minutes to restore their lead though, as Davide Frattesi rounded off a wonderfully worked counterattack.
As many would’ve guessed, with Inter looking to defend their lead, it was a cagey opening 45 in Lombardy for the second meeting. Both sides had a few opportunities but nothing clear cut, and they headed into the break level at 0-0.
The floodgates would soon open though, with England captain Harry Kane smashing home the opener on the 52-minute mark to put Bayern ahead on the night, and to draw them level on aggregate.
Martinez quickly responded in the 58th minute to restore the hosts’ advantage in the tie, converting after the ball dropped in the box from a corner. Three minutes later, Benjamin Pavard added to Inter’s lead with another goal from a corner.
Eric Dier reduced the deficit with a header from a well worked set piece routine to give Vincent Kompany’s men a glimmer of hope on 76 minutes, however the Serie A leaders stood strong to seal their spot in the final four.
La Liga giants Barcelona await I Nerazzurri in the semi-finals, while Arsenal take on Paris Saint-Germain in the other semi.
