Gavin Cromwell’s Inothewayurthinkin denied Galopin Des Champs a third straight Cheltenham Gold Cup in a thrilling encounter at Prestbury Park.

JP McManus bagged his second winner in the race following Synchronised’s triumph in 2012 and the decision to supplement Inothewayurthinkin for £25,000 last week paid dividends as he collects the £360,000 prize.

The seven-year-old is also the ante-post favourite for next month’s Grand National at Aintree and there’s every chance he’ll be the shortest price ever seen in the race.

Galopin Des Champs didn’t look comfortable from the start, possibly due to the quicker going and he was also hampered by a fall from Ahoy Senor but there’s no denying he was beaten by the better horse on the day.

Willie Mullins’ stable star was seeking back-to-back-to-back Gold Cups while Paul Townend was bidding to become the winningest jockey in the race’s history, but it simply wasn’t to be.

The conditions fell in Inothewayurthinkin’s favour and he produced a monstrous performance up the hill to quicken and dethrone the best staying chaser in National Hunt racing.

According to RaceiQ data, Inothewayurthinkin hit the highest top speed of the race at 36.7mph and gained an advantage of over five lengths on the runner-up in the air.

The mount of Mark Walsh approached the final fence at 33.22mph, 1.4mph quicker than Galopin Des Champs and it was a very uncomplicated victory in the end.

Inothewayurthinkin displayed a killer turn of foot round the final bend and 13 years on from Synchronised, McManus has another Gold Cup hero.

The billionaire tycoon said:

“You have to enjoy these moments, they are so long in the making. We’ve had him since he was a foal, he was bred by (wife) Noreen. It’s a very exciting time and I will treasure it.

“I would like to see it again, I don’t think I took it all in, but it’s an exciting day.”
