What Happened in the First Leg Between Arsenal and PSG?

With the Premier League title out of reach, Arsenal put all their eggs in the Champions League basket, resting key players ahead of the semi-final first leg at the Emirates Stadium. Unfortunately for the Gunners, their preparation could not save them against the rapid Parisians, who put their noses in front just three minutes into the game.

The dangerous Ousmane Dembele picked up the ball in midfield and dribbled into the Zone 14 before squaring it off to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia on the left. Completely unmarked, the Georgian pulled the ball back for Dembele, who applied a first-time finish to send the ball into the back of the net. PSG kept piling men forward in search of the insurance goal, but Arsenal somehow survived.

Towards the end of the first half, Arsenal upped the ante, drawing some catches and smart saves out of PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. By the end of the first half, the Italian had stopped four shots, facing an xGOT of 1.22.

Two minutes into the second half, Mikel Merino hit the back of the PSG net, but following a lengthy review, VAR chalked the goal off for offside. Arsenal stepped on the gas, but an in-form Donnarumma kept them at bay, handing PSG a slender but crucial advantage to take home.
