Casemiro, who knows Athletic Bilbao inside out thanks to his time with Real Madrid, opened the scoring in the 30th minute, steering in his header from close range. Harry Maguire was superb in the build-up of United’s opener, creating the chance with his cross from the right.

In the 32nd minute, Daniel Vivian brought Rasmus Hojlund down in the box. The referee initially brushed it off, but VAR urged him to take a closer look. Following a pitch-side review, the referee not only pointed to the spot but also sent Vivian off for blocking a clear goalscoring opportunity. Captain Bruno Fernandes converted from the resulting penalty to send Man Utd 2-0 up.

The skipper doubled his money just before the break against 10-man Bilbao, calmly turning in Ugarte’s lay-off from 10 yards out.

The hosts tried to put pressure on Man Utd in the second half, but playing with a man down, they could not find a breakthrough.
