Spain’s Seve Ballesteros started this run in 1980 and over the next sixteen year’s the event saw NINE more winners from around Europe – three of these where by Englishman Nick Faldo.
Faldo become the first Englishman to win the Masters in 1989 with a score of -5 and he made no mistake in this title defence a year later. Doubling his score to win on -10 in 1990.
These two wins were sandwiched with victories in 1988 from Scotland’s Sandy Lyle and in 1991 by Welshman Ian Woosnam – meaning the Masters wasn’t won by a US player for a four-year period.
Which was the first time this had ever happened in Masters history and this record remains to this day.
Faldo added a third Masters title in 1996 – seeing off Australian Greg Norman in a famous battle (watch below).
At the time this trio of wins saw him golfing greats Jimmy Demaret, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus as 3+ time winners.

Yorkshireman Willett won that year’s event with a score of -5, which, remarkably, was 13 shots more than the previous year’s winner Jordan Spieth (-18).
Willett’s success that year will also be ed for the famous collapse of the current champion Spieth – who led by five shots on the final round at the 10th hole.
Before hitting a quadruple bogey on the par 3 12th hole – bringing him right back to the chasing pack, which Willett was in.
