Gianni Buttice returns with his latest set of FPL tips for Gameweek 37 on SportsCasting – this week listing the reasons why you should consider making Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo your captain.

FPL Gameweek 37 Tips: Why You Should Make Mbeumo Your Captain

Most FPL managers this week will captain the player they buy with some targeting Cole Palmer but most engaged managers on X, buying and captaining Ollie Watkins. There is however a strong argument to give the armband to Bryan Mbeumo instead and because he has only two assists in his last two games, fewer managers are looking at him.

We don’t need to discuss the fact that Mbeumo plays 90, takes penalties and set pieces and is the talisman for a very attacking Brentford team. The vast majority of FPL managers already know this and it’s the reason Mbeumo is the second highest points scorer in the game this season behind Mo Salah. There is a narrative away from the obvious that needs to be highlighted this week and these three reasons make Mbeumo, for me the obvious captain choice.

Farewell

This could be Mbeumo’s last home game at the Gtech Stadium wearing a Brentford shirt. He’s been heavily linked with a move away this summer and should this be the last time he plays in front of the home faithful he will surely want to end on a high? Mbeumo has 218 appearances for Brentford and scored 63 goals since he ed in 2019.

European Football

Brentford are playing for European football and a win against Fulham this weekend brings them very close to playing in Europe for the first time in their history. This is a team that was playing in the Championship only a few seasons ago and we cannot underestimate how much of a carrot this is for Brentford.

Target Fulham

This is a great time to be playing Fulham now they have nothing to play for an are effectively ‘on the beach.’  Marco Silva has been linked with a move away this summer and having just conceded three goals to goal shy Everton, Fulham were poor last time out.

Derby

Brentford vs Fulham is a west London derby with a bit of bite and this game matters to the fans and the players. Brentford have a good recent record in this fixture and like all top players Mbeumo loves the big occasion.

Verdict

At the time of writing, I am unsure who I will captain but the fact that Mbeumo hasn’t hauled in his last couple of games is perhaps a positive because fewer eyes will be on him now. I am chasing rank and therefore a differential like Cole Palmer appeals more but the sensible decision is Bryan Mbeumo in my opinion.
