Manchester United legend Gary Neville believes Liverpool boss Arne Slot would have asked his players to pull up their socks after the shock defeat to Fulham.

Runaway leaders Liverpool succumbed to a 3-2 defeat to Fulham in their Premier League showdown at Craven Cottage on Sunday, 6 April. Alexis Mac Allister fired the visitors into the lead (14′) before Ryan Sessegnon (23′), Alex Iwobi (32′), and Rodrigo Muniz (37′) put Fulham in the driver’s seat. Luis Diaz got one back in the 72nd minute, but it did not trigger a turnaround.

Since second-placed Arsenal also dropped points — a 1-1 draw with Everton — over the weekend, the defeat did not hurt the Reds much. They are still in complete control of proceedings, leading the Premier League race by 11 points with seven games to play.

Gary Neville Shares What Arne Slot Would Have Told Liverpool Players After Fulham Loss

On the Gary Neville Podcast, the former Premier League defender began by identifying the root cause of the upset.

He said:

It just looked like a team to me that knew that they’d won the league against Everton at home in a big game and then obviously Arsenal not winning again yesterday [against Everton]. I think you’re almost like we can afford to make a mistake here and in life, just as a habit, when you take a breath and go, ooh [sighs], we’re nearly there, it just gives you a little punch and a little dig and that’s what Liverpool have had.”

Neville then speculated what Slot would have said after Liverpool’s loss to Fulham.

But that will be a message from Arne Slot in the dressing room will be, ‘Lads, seriously, don’t mess this up to an extent where we basically win by five points at the end and everyone thinks it was close when you look back. It’s not been close. So, go and win it by 12, 13, 14 points, go and keep your consistency in your performance levels high’ because you don’t want to finish the season with a bit of a lull.”

Liverpool, who are inching towards their 20th English title, will take on West Ham United in their Matchday 32 outing on Sunday, 13 April.
