This Sunday’s French Derby runners 2025 will see a competitive field of 18 entries heading to post for the Chantilly Group One – headed by the Ryan Moore-ridden Camille Pissarro for trainer Aidan O’Brien.

In total there will be six UK or Irish-trained runners making the trip over (see below), plus we list an interesting ‘draw stat’ that has thrown out four winners in the last five renewals.

Ryan Moore and Aidan O’Brien Have Only Won The French Derby Once Each Before

There aren’t many European Group One races jockey Ryan Moore and Aidan O’Brien haven’t won and even though they’ve both got the French Derby on their CV’s – some might say it’s slightly surprising they only have one victory each.

Yes, Moore’s only success in Sunday’s French Derby came on the Kevin Ryan-trained The Grey Gatsby back in 2014.

While the sole Aidan O’Brien success in the Prix du Jockey Club was in 2021 with St Mark’s Basilica – with Spanish jockey Ioritz Mendizabal in the plate.

However, the feared duo have a big chance of doubling their tallies this weekend as Camille Pissarro is the French Derby runner 2025 that the best horse racing betting sites in the UK make favourite.

Camille Pissarro Has A Nice French Derby Stall

This 3 year-old has been handed a nice draw in gate one, with four of the last five winners hailing from stalls three or lower.

The Wootton Bassett colt is also no stranger to running in .

He was also seen finishing a fine third to stablemate Henri Matisse in the Group One Poule d’Essai des Poulains – which is the French equivalent to the 2000 Guineas.

This will be the first time Camille Pissarro is stepped up in trip to 1m 2 1/2f, but the way he finished last time there is every reason to think it will suit.

Ballydoyle, who also run Trinity College in the race, will be hoping to win the French Derby before adding to the Aidan O’Brien Epsom Derby winners back in the UK next Saturday.

Camille Pissarro will take on a maximum of 17 other French Derby runners 2025 – see below.

Seven Of The Last Eight French Derby Winners Drawn 6 Or Lower

Despite the big field the French Derby trends tell us that we could whittle down the runners – by just using the draw.

This is because those drawn low in this Chantilly race has done well in recent years.

A massive 86% of the last seven winners came from gates 6 or lower – meaning we could rule out two thirds of the field.

While four of the last five runners came from stalls 1, 2 or 3 – that’s an 80% strike-rate since 2020.

  • 1 – Camille Pissarro
  • 2 – Frankly Good Cen
  • 3 – Trinity College
  • 4 – Sinileo
  • 5 – Curragh Camp

Trainer Jean-Claude Rouget Has Won The French Derby Five Times Since 2016

Jean-Claude Rouget Has Won The French Derby Six Times

Of the home-based trainers it’s Jean-Claude Rouget that should be feared most.

Why? Well, the top French handler has a terrific record in the race – winning the French Derby five times since 2016 and six times in total.

His first success came in 2009 with Le Havre and his most recent in 2023 with Ace Impact.

It’s also slightly surprising that veteran French trainer André Fabre (4 wins) has won the race less times than Jean-Claude Rouget.

This year Jean-Claude Rouget will be trying to add to his haul, with his 2025 French Derby runners being Tipinso and Leffard.

While André Fabre runs Cualificar, Nitol and Sinileo.

The pair still have some way to go to better the winning-most trainer in the race – Tom Jennings Sr, who won the prize 10 times between 1852 and 1882.
