The 2025 Epsom Derby draw is out, and we know that a maximum of 19 runners will head to post for the 246th running of the biggest flat race in Britain. However, when studying the form, the stall has been a big pointer into helping find the Epsom Derby winner – with some starting positions having a much better strike-rate than others.

Why? Well, since the starting stalls were first introduced in 1967, there are still FOUR Epsom Derby draw numbers that are yet to produce a winner – plus one berth that have seen a stonking eleven winners.

Starting Stalls Were Introduced To The Epsom Derby In 1967 3b43s

Before 1967 the Epsom Derby used to begin with a standing start – just like the Grand National is today.

However, from this date the world famous race has used starting stalls or gates – meaning all the Epsom Derby runners now start on a more level playing field.

Many would also think that with the race being run over 1m4f – then the Epsom Derby draw doesn’t really matter too much – wrong.

We’ll explain why the Derby draw has a big impact on the race below.

But with the starting stalls now dating back to 1967, this means we’ve now built up 58 years of stalls data – and there have been some surprising results.

With the Epsom Derby draw for some numbers having far better returns of producing the winner than others – with FOUR gates still winless since 1967.

Gates 2, 11, 16 (and 20) HAVEN’T Produced a Derby Winner Since Stalls Were Introduced 154s3g

If these Epsom Derby draw stats are to be believed – then you might want to think twice about backing horses from stalls 2, 11 and 16.

Why? Well, since 1967 and the first Derby run with starting stalls – this trio of gates are STILL TO HAVE A WINNER.

Yes, in 2022 (Westover) and 2023 (White Birch) came from gate 2 to finish third, but like stalls 11 and 16 – these three gates have been the graveyard Epsom Derby draw numbers.

Meaning this is not great news for fans of the Ralph Beckett yard as both of their two 2025 Epsom Derby runners – Stanhope Gardens (2) and recent Dante Stakes winner Prince Of Arras (16) – have been handed these luckless stalls.

Gate 20 also hasn’t seen a Derby winner – but there are only 19 runners in 2025, so this starting stall won’t be used.

Epsom Derby Draw 10 Has The Best Record Since 1967, With ELEVEN Wins  l6t48

In contrast to the poor stats for gates 2, 11 and 16 – there has been a ‘STANDOUT STALL’.

Step forward NUMBER 10.

This Epsom Derby draw has seen a staggering ELEVEN winners since 1967 – which equates to a 19% return.

Therefore, with his cracking strike-rate it would be foolish to ignore this year’s Epsom Derby runner from gate 10 – LAMBOURN.

This 3 year-old is also one of the more fancied horses that is also one of the Aidan O’Brien Derby runners – who is the most successful trainer in the history of the race (10 wins).

Plus, what makes this incredible draw stat even more interesting is that the gate right next door to ten (11) is still to produce a winner.

Since 2018 there have been two winners from stall 10 – Masar (2018) and Auguste Rodin (2023).

Here is the full list of draw 10 winners -The Minstrel, Shahrastani, Reference Point, Nashwan, Quest For Fame, Generous, Galileo, Sir Percy, Ruler Of The World, Masar and Auguste Rodin.

With number 10 having such a good record – maybe this will be the Keir Starmer Derby pick.

The Epsom Derby Winner Has Come Between Stalls 7-14 (inc) In 9 Of The Last 11 Runnings (82%) 5f4b26

If we then look at the Epsom Derby draw stats in just the last eleven runnings this also throws out another interesting angle.

As a massive NINE of the last eleven Derby winners came between gates 7-14 – meaning this section of stalls have produced 82% of the winners since 2014.

Plus, if we ignore gate 11 (Toronado Alert) – as this is still to see a winner – then we are left with just seven runners (see below).

What Stall Did Last Year’s (2024) Epsom Derby Winner Come From? 6r6b5k

Many people ask how many times has Aidan O’Brien won the Epsom Derby – well, the answer is TEN, with his most recent success coming only last year (2024).

His latest winner was City Of Troy, who bounced back from a poor run in the 2000 Guineas to reward favourite backers at 3/1.

He was also the Ryan Moore Derby ride that year and gave the top rider his fourth win in the race.

City Of Troy came from gate 1 – and was the second winner from that stall since 2021. With Adayar also winning from Epsom Derby draw 1.

This year’s gate 1 Derby runner is Rogue Impact.

Why Is The Epsom Derby Draw So Important? 1su5l

Despite the Derby being run over 1m4f – and many people thinking there is plenty of time for horses to recover from a bad start – the Epsom Derby draw stats say otherwise.

This is because having a good early position can help save ground and energy for the final stages of the race – which is a tad uphill.

As you can see from the Epsom track map below the Derby start is on a slight bend too, so horses drawn low start on the left side of the course – and away from that first turn.

Meaning the either have to use up more energy to start well and get over – or waste ground by tucking over and in behind the other runners.

However, in contrast, the horses drawn more in the middle (7-14) have more options – if the jockey is on the right horse they can make the running. Or decide to drop in just behind the leaders.
