England fans have been left perplexed by Thomas Tuchel’s first squad selection, as the German has included Jordan Henderson for the World Cup qualifiers.

Thomas Tuchel’s First England Squad

The former Chelsea manager has selected his first 26-man squad as England boss and Thomas Tuchel has caused quite the stir with some interesting selections.

One choice that has left fans in uproar is the inclusion of former Liverpool captain, Jordan Henderson, who appeared to be out of the picture.

Henderson has not played for England since October 2023, as the Ajax midfielder was not included in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 England squad.

His inclusion in this squad has been criticised for multiple reasons, however, the main one is due to the plethora of Premier League talent that has been left out.

Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, Morgan Gibbs-White and Angel Gomes have all been performing well in recent months – whilst all being options for the future due to their age.

Another surprising feature of Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad is the addition of Marcus Rashford, who has not been involved with the Three Lions since March 2024.

The Englishman is currently on loan at Aston Villa after falling out with Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim and has put in some good performances under Unai Emery especially in the Champions League.

However, he is yet to score a goal for Villa and has not scored a Premier League goal since January 2025, which puts some doubt over his inclusion in the squad.

Other areas that have raised some eyebrows is the decision to choose four goalkeepers instead of three, with Burnley’s James Trafford earning a spot.

Aaron Ramsdale, Dean Henderson and Jordan Pickford are also in the squad, but the latter has been the Number one for the Three Lions since 2018.

Dan Burn has also been included in an England squad for the first time, with Harry Maguire and John Stones missing out through injury.

The main talking point is the inclusion of Jordan Henderson, which has caused England fans to give their thoughts on social media – with the majority being far from positive.

This Three Lions ed has questioned why the former Liverpool captain was selected over Morgan Gibbs-White after a strong season with Nottingham Forest.

Another fan pointed out how Jordan Henderson’s age makes his inclusion even more shocking, as the veteran midfielder will be 36-years-old at the next World Cup.

Now this is quite a damning fact, as Henderson has started two of Ajax’s last nine games which means Tuchel’s decision won’t have been made on recent performances.
