‘I Had No Comeback’ – Chris Sutton Recalls Hilarious Exchange While Predicting Scoreline for Chelsea vs Morecambe

Former Lincoln City manager Chris Sutton has predicted Chelsea will claim a comfortable victory over Morecambe in their FA Cup Third Round meeting this weekend.
Chelsea, who are in fourth place in the Premier League rankings, will lock horns with League Two strugglers Morecambe in the FA Cup Third Round at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, 11th January. The Blues are carrying a four-game winless streak into the game (2 L, 2 D), with their last success coming long back on the 19th of December against UEFA Europa Conference League opponents Shamrock Rovers (5-1).
Morecambe, on the other hand, have won two of their last five games in League Two, losing the remaining three. They are coming into the FA Cup tie on the back of a 2-0 win over Tranmere.
Chris Sutton Recalls Hilarious Exchange With Referee While Previewing Chelsea vs Morecambe
Previewing the game in his BBC column, Sutton recalled how he was once humbled by Morecambe but backed Enzo Maresca to avoid the same fate.
“Morecambe are struggling at the bottom of League Two now, but I getting humbled 3-1 by them once, when I was Lincoln manager,” Sutton began.
“I had a pop at the linesman in the second half over an offside call and gave him a bit of stick. He turned around and told me ‘Don’t worry about me mate, your team is rubbish’, only he used a rude word. I had no comeback to that, so I just went and quietly sat back down in my dug-out.”
He continued:
“As far as this tie goes, you cannot look past Chelsea even though they have had a disappointing dip in form in the Premier League.
“Enzo Maresca will use his Europa Conference line-up, but they will still be too strong for the Shrimps. He does not have to worry about the linesman giving him stick.”
Sutton’s prediction: Chelsea 6-1 Morecambe
Chelsea drew 1-1 in their last outing against Crystal Palace in the Premier League. Cole Palmer gave the Blues the lead in the 14th minute but Jean-Philippe Mateta scored in the 82nd minute to deny the Pensioners a much-needed victory.
After the FA Cup Third Round meeting with Morecambe, Chelsea will return to Premier League action with a clash against Bournemouth on Tuesday, 14th January.
