Champions League 2024-25 Witnessed a Record 3.26 Goals/Game In The Group Stage

When it was first announced, there were huge question marks over the new group stage format adopted in the 2024-25 Champions League. However, as the group stage has come to a close, it has proved to be rather successful with football fans.

The group stage of the new format just culminated in an exciting finale as 18 games kicked off simultaneously. The tournament’s new format also resulted in a record rate of goals scored.

We compared this season’s data with the past editions, starting with the 2010-11 Champions League. In the comparison, the scoring rate came out to be the highest during the ongoing edition.

As the number of games increased from 96 to 144 this year, the number of goals scored in the group stage was expected to increase. However, the new format saw 3.26 goals per game, which is significantly more than the rate of goals in the past editions.

Prior to this year, the 2019-20 edition saw the highest rate of goals scored at 3.20 goals per game. The 2017-18 edition was slightly behind at 3.19 goals per game. And in 2022-23, the goal-scoring rate touched 3.17.

The scoring rate has tended to be greater than three goals per game in recent years, but it has taken a significant jump to 3.26 goals per game during the ongoing season.

Barcelona were the top scorers in the group stage with 28 goals, followed by Borussia Dortmund with 22 goals. Atletico Madrid, Atalanta, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid were all tied with 20 goals each.

Vyom Chaudhary, editor at Sportscasting.com, added: “Although there is no sure way of finding the reason/s behind the increase in the scoring rate, one possible reason could be that teams had less motivation to play for draws in the new format. Hence, the attacking intent of teams resulted in a higher number of goals.”
