World No 3 Carlos Alcaraz is looking forward to renewing his rivalry with top dog Jannik Sinner following the latter’s three-month doping ban.

Sinner will make his return at the Rome Open this weekend after twice testing positive for banned substance clostebol which led to the Italian reaching a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada).

Wada insisted Sinner’s case was ‘a million miles away from doping,’ accepting the 23-year-old was inadvertently contaminated when his physiotherapist treated a cut on his hand with an over-the-counter spray.

Alcaraz celebrated the return of Sinner, with whom he shares an already iconic rivalry and boasts a 6-4 competitive head-to-head lead over.

“I’m really happy to have him around again. It’s great for me, for tennis, for the fans to have him around again.

“Hopefully I’m going to meet him at the final. I’m going to enjoy watching him playing again, his matches.”

Following the retirement of two of tennis‘ ‘big three’ in Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, Alcaraz vs Sinner is arguably the biggest active rivalry in the men’s game.

Alcaraz, 22 and Sinner, 23, have undoubtedly long and successful careers ahead of them but fans are eagerly awaiting the two to meet in a Grand Slam final.

Despite being two years younger, the Spaniard has one more major title (French Open 2024, Wimbledon 2023-24, US Open 2022) than Sinner (Australian Open 2024-25, US Open 2024).
