Gakpo Brace Inspires Reds Victory At The Amex

Looking to extend their unbeaten run to 10 straight matches, Liverpool headed to the south coast to take on Brighton at the Amex in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Wednesday evening.

Arne Slot used the tie as an opportunity to give the likes of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Alexis Mac Allister a rest, handing starts to youngsters Vitezslav Jaros, Conor Bradley, Tyler Morton and Jarell Quansah.

A goalless opening 45 minutes saw the pair head into the half time break with a level scoreline, but the second half would be the complete opposite, with a total of five goals being scored during the second period.

The first came courtesy of Dutch winger Cody Gakpo, who cut in from the left-hand side and smashed in a thunderous effort past Jason Steele just a minute into the half, before adding a second on the 63-minute mark with another powerful effort.

Some poor play from the visiting defence handed the Seagulls an opportunity to reduce the deficit in the 81st minute, and after Evan Ferguson’s strike was denied, Simon Adingra did just that by poking home the rebound.

Liverpool would restore their two-goal cushion just four minutes later though, with Luis Diaz slotting home under Steele at his near post after some fine footwork to bring the ball down in the Brighton penalty area.

Five minutes later, Fabian Hurzeler’s side reapplied the pressure on the visitors through Tariq Lamptey, whose deflected effort wrongfooted Jaros, but luckily for the travelling , the Reds held on to book their place in the quarter-finals.
