Sandown plays host to their biggest evening racing fixture this Thursday, with a six-race card which is spearheaded by the Group Three Brigadier Gerard Stakes. It’s a race jockey Ryan Moore has a top record in (7 wins), but a rider that’s never won the race is Oisin Murphy and he’s been booked for one of the leading Brigadier Gerard runners – Almaqam.

We’ve also got the key big race trends for the Sandown race below – including 77% of the last 22 winners having finished in the top three last time out.

Brigadier Gerard Stakes Runners Headed By Oisin Murphy-Ridden Almaqam

This week’s Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown Park is shaping up to be a fair renewal, with the ‘boys in blue’ of Godolphin having a decent hand as they look for only their third win in the race.

They run three – Ancient Wisdom, Military Order and Ombudsman.

It’s also a prize trainer John Gosden has won three times in his career and twice in the last nine runnings – he runs the already mentioned unbeaten Ombudsman, with Ryan Moore booked to ride.

However, another 2025 Brigadier Gerard Stakes runner that is sure to attract attention is the Oisin Murphy-ridden Almaqam.

This son of Lope De Vega was a Listed winner at Sandown last season and returned this term with a fair third in the Gordon Richards Stakes (watch below) – again here at the Esher track.

Murphy has been booked to ride this Ed Walker runner, who will be looking to give both trainer and jockey their first wins in this Sandown Group Three.

Jockey Ryan Moore Has Won The Brigadier Gerard Stakes Seven Times

Brigadier Gerard Stakes Runners and Trends as Oisin Murphy Eyes First Win In Sandown Group Three

If you are looking for the Brigadier Gerard Stakes jockey with the best recent record in the race – then look no further than Ryan Moore.

The top rider has won no fewer than SEVEN Brigadier Gerard Stakes so far in his career and you feel he’s not finished yet.

All of these wins have also come in the last 14 runnings – meaning he’s got a 50% strike-rate since 2011.

Moore’s first win in the big midweek Sandown race came back in 2011 on the former Epsom Derby winner Workforce and has added six more victories since.

He also guided home a Royal winner for the Queen in 2012 with Charlton House, while his most recent Brigadier Gerard Stakes win came on the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Bay Bridge in 2022.

No rider in the history of the race, that was first run in 1953 has ridden more that Moore. The race was renamed in 1973 in honour of the classy Brigadier Gerard, who won many of the top flat races including the 1971 St James’s Palace Stakes and Sussex Stakes, plus the 1972 Coral-Eclipse Stakes here at Sandown.

Stoute is also the winning-most trainer, with a remarkable 11 wins in the race. But the good news for the other stables is that Sir Michael Stoute is now retired.

Ryan Moore has been booked to ride Godolphin’s unbeaten colt Ombudsman for trainer John and Thady Gosden.

Moore will be trying to give Gosden his fourth win in the race and his third since 2015.
