Atletico Madrid 2-4 Barcelona: Match Summary

Fresh off a heartbreaking defeat to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, Atletico Madrid hosted domestic rivals Barcelona in search of salvation. Hansi Flick’s Barca carved out the first opportunity inside the first five minutes, courtesy of a brilliant piece of play by Lamine Yamal. The 17-year-old played a little one-two with Dani Olmo before firing at goal. His curling effort kissed the outside of the left pose before going behind for a goal kick. In the 44th minute, Robert Lewandowski got a fine opportunity to test the goalkeeper from the left side of the box, but his effort did not land on target.

In the following minute, Atletico Madrid landed the first blow, with Julian Alvarez applying an excellent first-time finish to Giuliano Simeone’s cutback. The hosts doubled their advantage in the 70th minute, as Alexander Sorloth turned in Conor Gallagher’s delivery.

Two minutes after Atletico’s goal, Lewandowski brought Barca back into the contest, controlling Inigo Martinez’s early cross with his chest and steering it home with his left foot. Six minutes later, substitute Ferran Torres levelled the score, applying a thumping header to Raphinha’s inch-perfect cross. Two minutes into added, time, Yamal went for goal with an outside-the-box effort. His shot took a fortunate deflection and nestled into the side-netting, putting Barca 3-2 up.

Four minutes later, Torres put the game to bed, dribbling past challenges and beating Oblak with a powerful effort from the edge of the box. A masterful display from Flick’s men.

Pau Cubarsi (6.5/10):

It was not the best game of the Barcelona centre-back’s career. Struggled with his positioning for most of the night.

He also won 11 duels and made five recoveries.
