Barcelona opened up a seven-point lead at the top of the LaLiga rankings with a 1-0 victory over Mallorca on Tuesday night, April 22. SportCasting examines how the Blaugrana players fared in the Matchday 33 clash.

Barcelona 1-0 Mallorca: Match Summary

With Robert Lewandowski nursing his hamstring and Raphinha below his 100 per cent, Hansi Flick fielded Ferran Torres and Ansu Fati in attack. The Blaugrana started well, drawing a double save out of Leo Roman in the 12th minute. Torres had a go at goal from outside the area. Roman blocked his shot, but the loose ball fell to the dangerous Lamine Yamal. The Spaniard pulled the trigger, but Roman made a strong save to keep the ball out.

In the 25th minute, Yamal played a gem of a through ball with the outside of his boot, finding Dani Olmo inside the box. The Spaniard steered the ball towards goal, but Roman was once again up to the task. Four minutes later, Gavi tried his luck from outside the box. The ball took a deflection, clattered against the right-hand post, and came back out. The following minute, Ronald Araujo missed a sitter after Roman parried Yamal’s strike straight at him.

Barca came agonisingly close to scoring in the 41st minute, as Yamal, Pedri, and Hector Fort had shots at goal. Mallorca somehow managed to keep the game goalless.

The Catalans finally broke the deadlock in the 46th minute, thanks to a brilliant bit of play from Olmo. Receiving the ball from Eric Garcia, Olmo settled on the ball, engineered a bit of room with a dummy, and slid the ball into the bottom-left corner. Yamal had an excellent opportunity to make it 2-0 in the 79th minute, but Roman beat the teenager in their one-on-one duel.

Mallorca goalkeeper Roman, who made 12 saves facing an xGOT of 2.90, ended up on the losing side, but he was undoubtedly the game’s standout player.

Now, us as we explore Barcelona player ratings in full against Mallorca.

Barcelona Player Ratings vs Mallorca

Wojciech Szczesny (7/10):

Did not have to make even a single save, as all four of Mallorca’s efforts veered off target. He, however, made eight recoveries and cleared the ball, four times, with his punches.

Eric Garcia (7/10):

Eric Garcia put in an impressive shift on the right side of the Barcelona defence. He completed 69 es with 92% accuracy, created a chance, won two tackles, and made four recoveries.

Ronald Araujo (7.5/10):

Ronald Araujo was flawless at the back, but he should have done a lot better with his finish in the first half. The centre back made five clearances, recorded three interceptions, and won seven duels against Mallorca.

Inigo Martinez (7/10):

Solid as ever at the back, Inigo Martinez made seven clearances, ed four recoveries, and won five aerial duels. He also impressed with his distribution, playing 17 es into the final third and delivering six accurate long balls.

Hector Fort (6.5/10):

Filling in for Alejandro Balde, Hector Fort delivered a decent performance down the left flank. He played three es into the final third, made five recoveries, and completed two clearances. The 18-year-old, however, was weak in duels, losing all five he contested.

Gavi (7.5/10):

Gavi completed a game-high 109 accurate es against Mallorca over 90 minutes. He also created three chances, delivered four accurate long balls, and made four recoveries.

Pedri (9/10):

The creator-in-chief, Pedri, was at the top of his game against Mallorca. He created a match-high six chances, completed 106 es, pulled off all three of his dribbles, played a whopping 20 es into the final third, and ed a season-best 18 recoveries. Only a goal was missing from his splendid display.

Lamine Yamal (8/10):

The effervescent Lamine Yamal created as many as three chances in the LaLiga Matchday 33 clash. He also took 10 shots, four of which landed on target. The Spaniard’s overall game is pretty close to perfection, but his finishing is still not up to the mark.

Dani Olmo (8.5/10):

Dani Olmo scored the winning goal splendidly, receiving the ball with a brilliant first touch, pulling off a dummy to create a bit of room, and applying a clinical finish to find the bottom corner. The Spanish playmaker also created four chances and made three recoveries before coming off in the 62nd minute.

Ansu Fati (6.5/10):

Ansu Fati got a rare starting XI opportunity on Tuesday night. The 22-year-old created three chances and took four shots, only one of which landed on target. He was, however, poor in one-on-ones, losing eight of nine duels. Fati understandably needs to play more often to get back to his best.

Ferran Torres (7/10):

Filling in for Robert Lewandowski, Ferran Torres did not harm his reputation against Mallorca. He took four shots, created a couple of chances, pressed diligently, and won five of seven duels.

Substitutes

Raphinha (62′) (6/10): Just went through the motions. Nowhere near as menacing as he has been this season.

Pau Victor (77′) (7/10): Had very little time, but managed to torment Mallorca, creating two chances and taking two shots.

Gerard Martin (77′) & Frenkie de Jong (87′): No quantifiable impact.
