Unai Emery’s Aston Villa side came from behind to beat Chelsea thanks to a Marco Asensio brace and below are the player ratings.

Aston Villa vs Chelsea Player Ratings

Aston Villa Ratings

Emiliano Martinez –7

Made some important saves but was fortunate Ezri Konsa came to his rescue after he slipped under pressure from Cole Palmer.

Matty Cash – 6

Struggled to deal with the link-up play of Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez in the first-half. Didn’t get much opportunity to attack for Aston Villa.

Ezri Konsa – 7

Made a huge goalline clearance to deny Cole Palmer in the second-half. An important moment from a player who was a doubt going into the match.

Tyrone Mings – 6

Similar to the game against Liverpool, he made several mistakes which he was lucky to get away with. Attempted to battle through a knee injury that he suffered at the start of the second-half but was taken off at the hour-mark.

Ian Maatsen – 5

Pedro Neto’s pace and skill was a thorn in the side of the Aston Villa full-back who was rinsed by the Chelsea forward for the visitor’s first-half goal. Did improve in the second-half.

John McGinn – 6

Threw himself into plenty of tackles but made little impact on the match and went down to ground too easily on occasion.

Youri Tielemans – 6

Showed plenty of technical ability in the midfield for Aston Villa but struggled to keep Chelsea quiet in the first-half.

Morgan Rogers – 6

Quiet performance by Morgan Rogers’ standards this season with the occasional glimpse of what he can offer.

Marco Asensio – 8

Disappointing in the first-half and was surprising that he came back out in the second. Unai Emery was rewarded for his decision as he bagged a second-half brace to win the match for Aston Villa.

Jacob Ramsey – 6

Got stuck in for Aston Villa and was unfortunate to be hooked off at half-time when other players struggled more.

Ollie Watkins – 6

Will be disappointed with himself that he didn’t score after he was presented a number of opportunities through some poor Chelsea defending.

Substitutes

Marcus Rashford (On for Jacob Ramsey 46′) – 8

Game-changing impact off the bench as he set up both goals for Marco Asensio and was a menace for Chelsea’s defenders.

Lamare B0garde (On for Tyrone Mings 59′) – 6

Defended well when replacing the injured Tyrone Mings.

Andres Garcia (On for Matty Cash 70′) – 5

Largely anonymous when he came on but an error-free game after giving a goal away against Liverpool.

Leon Bailey (On for Ollie Watkins 77′) – 6

A livewire when he came on the pitch.

Donyell Malen (On for Morgan Rogers 78′) – 5

Missed a gilt-edged chance in his only real notable moment after coming on.

Chelsea Ratings

Filip Jorgensen – 4

Did little wrong and was heading for a 4/10 in our Aston Villa vs Chelsea player ratings. But his howler in the 89th minute cost Chelsea a point as he let a Marco Asensio strike squeeze underneath his body and roll across the line.

Malo Gusto – 6

Mixed game for the Chelsea star who showed some great moments of defensive work but also struggled one-on-one with Marcus Rashford during the second-half.

Trevoh Chalobah – N/A

Suffered an early injury which forced him off after just eight minutes.

Levi Colwill – 6

Similar to Gusto had some moments of solid defensive work, but also some moments where he gave the ball away far too easily.

Marc Cucurella – 7

Gave away some needless fouls but also put his body in the way to make some important blocks and dealt well with Matty Cash’s attempted overlapping runs.

Reece James – 5

Tough day for the Chelsea star who was playing in the centre of the park. Gave the ball away on a number of occasions which he was fortunate that Villa didn’t take advantage.

Moises Caicedo – 7

A typically quiet but solid performance from the Chelsea midfielder who did his best to protect his defenders.

Cole Palmer – 6

Was a threat in the final third but ultimately no end-product. Saw an effort cleared off the line which could have won the match for Chelsea.

Enzo Fernandez – 7

Scored an easy chance from an excellent Pedro Neto assist and Aston Villa struggled to deal with the Argentine midfielder’s late runs into the box. Perhaps could have scored more than just the one and was booked in the second-half.

Pedro Neto – 8

Produced a brilliant assist and caused Aston Villa all sorts of problems with his movement and link-up play.

Christopher Nkunku – 5

Didn’t offer much in of an attacking threat and was brought off in the second-half.

Substitutes

Tosin Adarabioyo (On for Trevoh Chalobah 8′) – 6

Entered the match early on and he defended well with any crosses that came into the pitch.

Jadon Sancho (On for Christopher Nkunku 76′) – 6

Worked hard but produced little of note.
