Marco Asensio Strikes Late Winner For Aston Villa

Aston Villa’s January gs contributed massively to help them come from behind against Chelsea on Saturday night.

Marco Asensio struck twice with Marcus Rashford coming off the bench to provide both assists for the Spaniard.

Villa extended their unbeaten home run in the Premier League to 14 games and piled more misery onto Chelsea.

Chelsea struck first after some classic wing play from Pedro Neto. The Portuguese international made light work of Ian Maatsen before cutting the ball for Enzo Fernandez to tuck home.

There were signs that Aston Villa players were feeling a bit leggy after their mid-week clash with Liverpool. The home side repeatedly gave the ball away, with moans and groans coming from the stands at Villa Park.

Chelsea’s defending was also questionable with Ollie Watkins presented multiple chances which he failed to take advantage of.

One Villa player who struggled in the first-half was Asensio. He offered little defensively and looked likely to come off at half-time.

However, Unai Emery instead opted to bring off Jacob Ramsey for Marcus Rashford. It was a decision that paid off hugely for the Aston Villa boss.

Asensio tapped in the equaliser after 54 minutes after Rashford played the ball back to him.

Both sides had their chances to win the game but none were closer than Cole Palmer. The Chelsea star beat Emiliano Martinez only for Ezri Konsa to make a goal-line clearance.

Then in the 89th minute, Rashford found Asensio again and the Spaniard’s effort squeezed under Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgenson and rolled slowly over the line.

It was a howler from the Chelsea goalkeeper but a moment to treasure for Aston Villa as they took a vital win in the race for top-four.

Aston Villa’s victory leaves them seventh in the Premier League – one point and position behind Chelsea. They are also two points off fourth-placed Manchester City who face Liverpool on Sunday.

Unai Emery’s side are next in action on Tuesday away at Crystal Palace. Chelsea will hope to return to winning ways against Southampton on the same evening.
