Arsenal are reportedly eyeing a shock move for Dan Ashworth as their new sporting director after his abrupt departure from Manchester United.

The Gunners are looking for a replacement for Edu following his resignation and have identified Ashworth as a prime candidate for the role, according to reports.

Ashworth’s exit from Old Trafford, confirmed on Sunday, came just five months into his tenure under the new leadership of INEOS, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

His dismissal followed Manchester United’s 3-2 loss to Nottingham Forest and was reportedly the result of clashes over operational decisions, particularly around job cuts and restructuring.

Ashworth’s brief time at United mirrors his similarly short spell on gardening leave at Newcastle shortly after ing from Brighton.

INEOS have decided to abandon the sporting director position altogether, delegating Ashworth’s responsibilities to the likes of Sir Dave Brailsford and Jason Wilcox.

Arsenal Target Dan Ashworth to Replace Edu

The situation presents an intriguing opportunity for Arsenal, who are pushing to solidify their position as Premier League title contenders.

Managing director Richard Garlick is reportedly spearheading Arsenal’s pursuit of Ashworth, building on their prior working relationship at West Brom between 2010 and 2013.

Their shared history could give Arsenal an edge in convincing Ashworth to return to football swiftly.

The timing may work in Arsenal’s favour, as Ashworth’s expertise and track record, particularly during his successful stints at Brighton and the FA, make him an appealing candidate.

However, the Gunners’ pursuit of Ashworth may face competition from Everton.

With The Friedkin Group’s impending takeover, Everton are set to overhaul their management structure, and Ashworth is rumoured to be among their targets for technical leadership roles.

Despite the abrupt nature of his United departure, it’s clear Ashworth remains a highly regarded figure in football.

Whether he would be willing to step into another high-profile role immediately remains uncertain. However, Arsenal’s exciting project and Garlick’s involvement could entice him.
