Anthony Gordon’s moment of madness has cost him a place in the Carabao Cup final after receiving a straight red card in Newcastle’s FA Cup defeat with Brighton.

Anthony Gordon To Miss Carabao Cup Final After Sending Off

The Newcastle winger is set to play no part in the Wembley showpiece on March 16 after seeing red in Sunday’s FA Cup fifth round tie.

Gordon lost his head in the 83rd minute against the Seagulls after he shoved Jan Paul van Hecke in the back of the head with both hands.

Even worse still is the fact that the play had already been flagged for offside with Gordon playing on before lashing out. Referee Anthony Taylor saw no other option than to send the England international off.

It came moments after Newcastle were denied a penalty, leading to the frustrations. Gordon protested the decision to the fourth official but to no avail with VAR seeing no reason to intervene.

A livid Eddie Howe refused to acknowledge Gordon as he left the pitch.

The automatic three-game ban will see Gordon miss Newcastle’s Premier League visit to West Ham on March 10, the Liverpool and then their home league game with Brentford on April 2.

It remains to be seen if Howe will appeal the sending off. If they are successful in their appeal, Gordon will be available to feature, having missed the Carabao Cup final in 2023.

It’s Not The First Time Newcastle Are Without A Key Man For The Carabao Cup Final

Gordon’s thoughtless sending off means it is the second final in a row Newcastle will be without a key man.

Back in 2023, goalkeeper Nick Pope was sent off in a league game against Liverpool. He missed the Carabao Cup final defeat by Manchester United.

Newcastle Dumped Out Of The FA Cup

Gordon wasn’t the only player to see red at St James’ Park on Sunday. Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey also picked up a second yellow in the latter stages before the game went to extra-time.

With the game sent to extra-time after finishing 1-1 after 90 minutes, Newcastle pushed for a winner.

But in devastating fashion for the Magpies, Danny Welbeck popped up with a 114th-minute winner to send Newcastle crashing out of the competition.
