A freak Alfie Jones own goal ensured Luton Town snatched a priceless 1-0 victory in their huge relegation six-pointer against Hull City.

Tigers captain Lewis Coyle unintentionally fired the ball straight into Jones and the ball ricocheted into the back of the net beyond stranded goalkeeper Ivor Pandur.

The unusual winner in the 46th minute now means the Hatters are just three points off Ruben Selles’ side and EFL Championship safety.

With just seven games to go, the visitors to the MKM Stadium have revitalised their survival hopes. Meanwhile, the hosts find themselves in real danger of dropping down to League One.

From Matt Bloomfield’s perspective, the Luton boss will be buoyed by his side’s defensive prowess on Saturday afternoon.

They soaked up everything Hull had to offer with Selles’ men boasting 14 shots and having 65% possession. All in all, the home side lacked a bite in front of goal.

Interestingly, the Tigers have scored just once in their last seven meetings against the Bedfordshire side and have fired blanks in their last four H2H encounters.

Alfie Jones Own Goal Condemns Hull To Luton Loss

The comical Alfie Jones own goal occurred just after the restart with seemingly no real danger of Luton scoring. Goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski launched the ball upfield which saw Carlton Morris head the ball on.

Fellow forward Elijah Adebayo tried to flick it back into Morris’ path before Lewis Coyle intervened and larruped the ball straight into Jones’ face which flew into the back of the net.

The bizarre moment appeared to revitalise the Hull faithful who tried to roar their side on in search of an equaliser. Unfortunately, it never came.

Ruben Selles’ side huffed and puffed but were unable to break down a resolute Hatters backline. Mark McGuinness in particular was a standout performer.

Next Saturday, Matt Bloomfield’s side welcome Premier League-chasing Leeds to Kenilworth Road. For Hull, they face a trip to Hillsborough to take on Sheffield Wednesday.

According to the best football betting sites in the UK, Hull are 7/1 to go down with Luton still priced at 4/6 to drop to League One.
