How Many Times Has Aidan O’Brien Won The Epsom Derby?

Since the race was first run in 1780, no trainer has won the Epsom Derby more times than top Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien – who has fired in a remarkable TEN wins in the most famous flat race in England. The Ballydoyle handler also has another strong-hand heading into 2025 – so can he add to his record haul?
Aidan O’Brien Has Won The Epsom Derby TEN Times In Total and For The Last Two Years
The history of the Epsom Derby stretches back 244 years with the first ever winner a horse called Diomed in 1780.
So really, it’s amazing to think that the current all-time Derby winning trainer is one that is still operating – AIDAN O’BRIEN.
Yes, the Ballydoyle handler has raced to the top of the Epsom Derby tree over the last century with TEN wins in the race – that have been crammed in between 2001 and 2024.
Aidan O’Brien got his Derby run under starter’s orders in 2001 with Galileo, who also went onto sire other Derby winners for O’Brien – Australia, Serpentine, Anthony Van Dyck and Ruler Of The World. You can relive all their Epsom Derby wins below.
In short – if it wasn’t for Galileo O’Brien would be sitting on a lot less Epsom Derby winners.
He’s also won four of the last six runnings – including the last two with Auguste Rodin and City Of Troy.
It will be a brave man to say he can’t make it three-in-row in 2025, which he managed between 2012 and 2014 when Camelot, Ruler Of The World and Australia all won.

The horse has since been retired and stands at the Coolmore Stud for €75,000.
2023 Epsom Derby Winner Auguste Rodin
Sired by champion Japanese horse Deep Impact, who won 14 of his 16 career starts – including the 2006 Japan Cup.
Like City Of Troy, Auguste Rodin ran below-par in the 2000 Guineas in his Derby year . But left that form behind to win the Epsom Derby by 1/2 a length from King Of Steel.

Camelot added the Irish Derby later that season too and raced on at 4 years-old – but only won once more. His last race came when fourth as a beaten favourite in the 2013 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot.
But won an incredible £1,926,569 during his racing career from only ten starts.
