In both the women’s and men’s tournaments, the biggest names of the last two decades finally show signs of ending their reigns, if not retiring altogether. It makes for an interesting list of winners across both singles competitions over the last decade — and should bode well for an exciting 2023 U.S. Open.

Most U.S. Open wins in tennis history
Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras, and Federer are tied for the most U.S. Open men’s singles titles. They each won the tournament five times in the open era. Federer has the unique accomplishment of winning five titles consecutively. During the amateur era — much earlier in the U.S. Open’s storied history — Americans Richard Sears, William Larned, and Bill Tilden won seven times each in the more locally-oriented days of the event.
For the women’s singles tournament, the open era is a tie between Chris Evert and (of course) Serena Williams, who both racked up six titles. Going back to the historic amateur era, Molla Mallory won a record eight U.S. Open titles.
Martina Navratilova has 16 titles in the Open era across all U.S. Open events, while the amateur era star Margaret Osborne duPont held 25 mixed titles. For the men, Bob Bryan’s nine titles is a great feat but technically is far sured by his amateur-era counterpart Bill Tilden’s 16 multi-event titles.
