The New York Giants made a bold move during the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. After selecting Abdul Carter with the 3rd overall pick, they traded back into the first round and acquired the 25th selection in a trade with the Houston Texans.

Giants Draft Dart, But Already Have 2 Veteran QBs On Roster

When the move was made, it was expected that they’d take a quarterback. The Giants did just that, adding Jaxson Dart from Ole Miss to potentially be their signal caller of the future. But given the QB situation in New York, it is unclear exactly when the newcomer will get his chance to contribute.

The Giants entered the 2025 NFL off-season with a glaring need for a signal caller. The Daniel Jones experiment came to a merciful end in 2024, leaving an opening at the position with a few options for filling the spot. Instead of waiting for the draft, they made moves in free agency, and brought in both Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston to fill out the depth chart.

Wilson likely signed with an assurance that he would be the starter regardless of how the draft played out. But how long will that last?

The 36-year-old’s best days are certainly behind him, and his production and performance has been a roller coaster over the past few seasons. But Wilson, and the Giants, believe that he still has something in the tank, and ed the team by g a one-year deal for the 2025 NFL season.

With both he and Winston on the roster, it is unlikely that Jaxson Dart sees much of any playing time during his rookie season. But he’ll be able to grow and learn from both of the veteran QBs ahead of him on the depth chart, and the Giants likely have an eye on 2026 as the year that Dart begins to play regularly. Winston has an extra year on his contract, meaning he could be around to either back Dart up next year or at least provide him with a competition in training camp.

Jaxson Dart started 38 games in his career at Ole Miss, and set the school record for career ing yards. The player he eclipsed for that mark is Eli Manning, whom the Giants and their fans may be familiar with.
