Can an animated film about Jesus Christ become a box office hit? View the predictions and odds for The King of Kings’ opening weekend box office total.

What Is The King of Kings About?

The King of Kings is not an ordinary tale about Jesus.

The animated movie is framed through the eyes of a bedtime story told by Charles Dickens (Kenneth Branagh) to his young son, Walter (Roman Griffin Davis).

At first, Walter only wants to hear about a story involving a king, to which Charles says, “This story is about the King of Kings.”

The duo then uses their imagination to transport themselves into biblical times to witness the life of Jesus Christ (Oscar Isaac). From miracles and great deeds to betrayals and persecution, Walter learns about Jesus in a story of “hope, love, and redemption.”

The voice cast also stars Uma Thurman, Mark Hamill, Pierce Brosnan, Forest Whitaker, and Ben Kingsley.

Seong-ho Jang writes and directs The King of Kings, a tale loosely inspired by Dickens’ children’s book The Life of Our Lord.

Angel Studios, the company behind Sound of Freedom, will release The King of Kings in theaters on April 11, 2025.

Prepare to be surprised.

Earlier this week, The King of Kings was projected to score a $10 to $12 million opening. That would have been solid for an animated biblical movie.

That number has already doubled.

Polymarket predicts an opening north of $24 million (-270) domestic as the likeliest outcome for The King of Kings.

How can an animated movie from a small studio make that much money in three days?

Angel Studios has a unique Pay It Forward Campaign where people can buy tickets for others. On Monday, Deadline reported that The King of Kings had $7.8 million in pre-sales.

The film’s website says the movie has sold 1.3 million tickets of its 1.5 million goal.

A Minecraft Movie will easily top the box office, but don’t be surprised if an animated movie about Jesus comes in second place.
