James is the most popular athlete on Team USA, and it’s not close. “King James” has 159 million followers on Instagram, the most of any American athlete.

No one who plays basketball for a living has more Instagram followers than James. Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Virat Kohli, and Neymar are the only athletes with more Instagram followers than James.

If Team USA men’s basketball wins the tournament, it will be James’ third Olympic gold medal.

Coming in at No. 2 is James’ teammate, Stephen Curry. The Golden State Warriors guard boasts the second most Instagram followers on Team USA with 56.7 million.

Curry is a four-time NBA champion and two-time MVP. However, 2024 marks his first appearance for Team USA in the Olympics.

Five more Team USA men’s basketball players are in the top 10: Kevin Durant (13.4 million) at No. 3, Joel Embiid (7.6 million) at No. 5, Jayson Tatum (7.1 million) at No. 6, Devin Booker (5.5 million) at No. 7, and Anthony Edwards (3.6 million) at No. 9.

Like James in basketball, Simone Biles is the most popular gymnast in the United States with 8 million followers. Biles’ popularity transcends the sport, as her popularity continues to rise thanks to her Netflix docies, Simone Biles: Rising.

Regarded as one of the greatest ever, Biles enters Paris tied with Shannon Miller for the most Olympic medals by an American gymnast.

Biles currently has four gold medals. If she wins two more golds, she es Anton Heda for the most Olympic gold medals for an American gymnast.

The other two non-basketball athletes in the top 10 are skateboarder Nyjah Huston (5.1 million) at No. 8 and sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson (3.4 million) at No. 10.

Huston is attempting to medal in street skateboarding for the first time. Huston participated in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but did not wind up on the podium.

On the track, Richardson was set to compete at the 2020 Tokoyo Olympics before being suspended for THC use. Now, Richardson is back at the 2024 Olympics and has an excellent chance of winning the women’s 100m.
