Steve Angeli Commits to Syracuse: Former Notre Dame Quarterback Finds New Beginning in ACC

Steve Angeli is leaving South Bend for Northern New York, and the Syracuse Orange believe they have their QB of the future.
Steve Angeli’s next chapter in college football is set. The former Notre Dame quarterback has committed to Syracuse, bringing his experience and poise to a program eager to climb in the ACC ranks under head coach Fran Brown.
After three seasons in South Bend, Angeli entered the transfer portal as a graduate transfer on April 17. Though he participated in Notre Dame’s 2025 spring practices, including the Blue-Gold game on April 12, the quarterback competition with CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey prompted Angeli to seek new opportunities. Now, he’ll bring his talents to upstate New York with two years of eligibility remaining.
Learning Under Pressure at Notre Dame
At Notre Dame, Angeli was a reliable backup and steady hand when called upon. The 6-foot-2, 208-pound quarterback served behind Riley Leonard during the Irish’s impressive 14-2 season in 2024, which culminated in a trip to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
In that campaign, Angeli appeared in 11 games, completing 24 of 36 es (66.7%) for 268 yards and three touchdowns, without throwing a single interception. His efficiency and readiness earned him an offensive grade of 82.3 from Pro Football Focus, third-highest on the team, trailing only Leonard and standout running back Jeremiyah Love.
Steve Angeli to Syracuse is intriguing. Really managed the Orange Bowl well when he came into play. Doesn’t make many mistakes.
10 career TDs on 1 INT. Took what the defense gave him didn’t try to do too much.

In total, Angeli played 103 offensive snaps last season, offering Notre Dame both stability and potential as a backup. Over his career in South Bend, which included one start—a win in the 2023 Sun Bowl over Oregon State—Angeli completed 72.5% of his es, throwing for 772 yards, 10 touchdowns, and just one interception in 21 appearances.
A Proven Competitor Looking for More
Despite strong performances when called upon, Angeli found himself in a logjam in Notre Dame’s quarterback room. Redshirt freshman CJ Carr and redshirt sophomore Kenny Minchey were also vying for the starting role heading into 2025, making it increasingly clear that Angeli’s path to the top job might require a change of scenery.
Ranked as the No. 265 overall transfer in the 2025 portal cycle by Rivals, Angeli is seen as a seasoned and accurate quarterback who can step in and contribute right away. His transfer to Syracuse marks an opportunity not just for more playing time, but for leadership in a program hungry for resurgence.
Some good Steve Angeli tape here- he’s mobile and completed 58 of 80 attempts (72.5%) at Notre Dame

Syracuse’s Signal Caller of the Future?
Head coach Fran Brown is looking to build something sustainable in Syracuse, and adding a quarterback with Angeli’s pedigree is a significant step forward. The Orange are hoping to blend experience with emerging talent, and Angeli’s time under pressure in high-stakes moments at Notre Dame could be invaluable.
At Syracuse, Angeli will have a chance to run an offense more tailored to his strengths and lead a team that is searching for stability at the quarterback position. His accuracy, decision-making, and experience on big stages make him a promising addition to the Orange roster.
Angeli’s football journey began at Bergen Catholic High School in New Jersey, where he was rated a three-star pro-style quarterback and the No. 14 recruit in the state in the class of 2022. Now, after three years in one of college football’s most storied programs, he brings that foundation—and a hunger for more—to Syracuse.
With two years left to make his mark, Steve Angeli is ready for his next challenge. And Syracuse is ready to welcome him.
